Cleaning Up under the Hood.

Maybe we can cut some slack?

Whats with adults giving children things they have no idea what they're doing with and letting them run rampant on them? You would think if the father wanted the son to learn what he's doing he'd be there to give advice on what to do and not do...

While I agree his responses to some corrections are not ideal, I'd rather the father give an old K5 to 'learn' on than to just hand over a few bucks for a lightly used Sentra. I grow tired of kids who run around with rice rockets trying to race me (not understanding how power/weight ratio works ,evidently) so having a kid with a nice American K5 and the will to rebuild it is refreshing. I suspect we all learned from asking questions and occasionally eating some crow when we found out what we 'thought' was right was actually incorrect.

As to the OP, it is critical to understand that if the part you mentioned was indeed chromed, that would seriously hinder it's ability to operate efficiently. I submit that perhaps you were inaccurately naming the part in question. It is helpful to maintain a certain amount of respect for the other posters, as there is a wealth of knowledge from people who have spent years gathering it...and questioning their knowledge is often not the best way to introduce yourself.

Just my 2 cents...

I just want to say guys, I'm not mouthing. When I go to autozone they recognize the valve covers as head covers as well, idk why but the do so I kind've adapted to that. I have a pretty thorough knowledge of engines. I'm not a dumb little kid that has no clue and I was just looking for suggestions as to what y'all might think looks nice and trust me I'm going to make this engine look good, and I will spend whatever it takes to make this thing not leak. It runs good currently but I'm just fixing it up...

my opinion: go on with your chrome: just dont overkill it. pick and chose what to hit with the bling and recognize that too much might look cheesy.

my boss put chrome EVERYWHERE on his corvette. it looks stupid.

so, chrome what you will... some pretty nice dress up kits can be bought in a package where you get a few things all together. i'd just clean up the wiring, keep it all loomed and tucked and safe.

an aluminum radiator always looks nice under the hood if you ask me.

Dude seriously.

The kid asked a legitimate question?!!!???!!

I started out somewhere too when I didn't know the proper name of every single little thing. I thought chrome was cool ( still do to a degree).

I realize he got a little uppity in a post above but your post adds less than nothing to the thread.

I have seen stupider questions answered in full without so much as a thats kind of a dumb question but heres the answer.

I could care less if his Dad gave him everything and walked away.

Rememeber what your Mom said, if you don't have anything useful to say DON'T SAY IT AT ALL!!!!!!!

Really I get that after this?

I did not on the other hand ask for your lousy opinion

First if you are using autozone as any point of reference as to your mechanical knowledge you are doing yourself a disservice. Second they are valve covers or rocker covers. You want to be taken serious here, correct your language. Finally 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of all "chrome" valve covers leak, will leak or have leaked. Like as been said you should look at alum valve covers with good gaskets. Alum can be polished to look chrome like and is typically less likely to leak. Be sure they have baffles or you will be pulling oil through your pcv. Don't buy anything from autozone esp if they don't have to order it. What they have on the shelf is junk. Finally despite the fact you feel walked on, you are a dumb little kid. I thought I was smart when I was 16, but by comparison I couldn't pour piss out of a boot with the instructions written on the heal. You can listen to us old farts that have been around the block about a million times more than you or you can do what you plan on and learn like we all did. Just trying to save you some money. You need to tell us more about the truck or take pics on the emissions removal part.

I say if the truck works, don't try to fix it. I've found that fixing my truck is very often the cause of the problem.

SWEET BABY JESUS, you'll never find a quote that has more years & wisdom behind it than this right here!

Felpro Blue Gaskets + Chrome Valve cover = No leaks. :waytogo:

Yes they are expensive ($40 or so) But when I broke my 400 in with the cork gaskets it leaked out my very expensive Royal Purple break in oil out of the valve covers. Bought these gaskets PUT THEM ON DRY, NO SILICONE, and no leaks. :flipoff7:

+1 for AutoZone's parts being junk. I just had an IAC fail after about 2 months.

Also +1 for the folks on this forum really knowing what they're talking about and willing to help.

I more meant pics of the OP's freshy painted rig, but that does make me feel better for the time being :thumb:

Hopefully OP's $1593 two tone paint job looks better than my $150 rattle can job. (By the way, my cab is rattle canned now too... it just wasn't at the time of that pic I posted).

Instead of bashing the poor new member, why not just give him a few ideas instead of being a$$es, you know exactly how you where when someone shot all your great ideas down when you first joined.... If he wants to run leaking chrome valve covers let him. That being said, remove the jack and all that nonsense. I removed the air pump, all its related stuff. Good quality headers cleaned up the rest of that AIR nonsense, and headers look good IMO, they leak though, so use a good copper header gasket and get a quality thick flange and a good coating or they look terrible after awhile. All i have under my hood is the EVAP canister for the gas tank. Remember when you unhook alot of VAC related things you can loose your blend doors for your heat/AC. Its a little plastic hose coming out behind the distributor by AC box if equipped. It needs manifold VAC if memory serves me. I ran the "cheap chrome" valve covers for years and they never leaked on my SBC. I used the load spreaders and t-handle valve cover bolts with a good gasket and worked good for years. The secret to chrome is to keep it clean, and keep it clean. I cleaned mine the entire time with wd-40 and they look good hangin on my garage wall now, after 7 years of mudding and solid abuse. Iv always been fond of alum intakes, i now have a polished/powdercoated high rise on my 454 and it looks kick a$$ on it, and never stains or gets all nasty like once its washed. Really i would look around at Truckin magazines for something like a show quality inside/outside/engine compartment, much better source for pictures and ideas of SHOW QUALITY than on here, as this is more a wheeling type source of info....
