What are you guys doing as far as cleaning the oil pan, timing cover, valve covers etc. both outside AND inside?

easy way is take to machine shop and have them dip in there solution.
I have a little parts washer with mineral spirits that I use for most cleanup work. I also use purple power, brake cleaner, engine gunk or whatever else is around with a variety of stiff brushes with a hose or pressure washer. Hot water helps a lot, hook a hose up to your water heater.
Castrol super clean 4-1 with water in plastic tub then I put in a bucket heater over night and the grease pretty much falls off.

Its damn near impossible to beat gas and/or acetone. Just avoid bathing in it. Gunk is good as well.
Easy off oven cleaner, cheap and works great.
Pretty well sums it up....Wear gloves and eye protection will using Purple Power type cleaners, they use some kind of acid in them.

Easy off over cleaner too but I do it at the car wash in a manual wash bay.
I've seen guys add elements to a regular parts washer and run purple power in it. Heat always helps....
This stuff is amazing. I was cleaning valve covers from a dirty motor and carb cleaner, brake cleaner, gasoline, simple green soaked for a day would do almost nothing. A can of oven cleaner from the dollar store and the crud ran off like water. I wouldn't trust it on painted stuff or a beautiful polished finish, but for the baked on crud it's magic and cheap.

Yes, I used Easy - off on my entire engine on an old truck I recently bought. The caked on grease and grime came right off ,after powerwashing. Unfortunatly the paint came off as well. It will also discolor aluminum, and take off any anodizing.
And skin too!! Didn't wear gloves the first time I used it and got some pretty nasty chemical burns.

This is my favorite method but I've used Purple Power,Mean Green and a couple others too. High water pressure rules! I once took a Buick down to bare metal with 10 cans of Dollar Store oven cleaner

Parts washer for the win! Or get engine degreaser and a power washer....
Oven cleaner is mostly plain old Lye--but for a buck a can at the dollar store,the cheap stuff works well,Easy-Off is better though..
I have used gas or diesel fuel outside to clean really grubby baked on greasy parts,I know its dangerous,but haven't had any issues--laquer thinner was also another thing I'd use--back when it was "cheap",not 16 bucks a gallon..mineral spirits work pretty well,and is a lot cheaper..but it about the same as diesel fuel..
Castrol Super Clean works great but like oven cleaner it'll eat paint off aluminum,and can damage the metal if left on too long..ruined a piston that way once..pitted it all to hell..its also pretty expensive.
I find plain old Dawn dishwashing liquid does a good job on grease--it'll get wheel bearing grease off your hands better than most hand cleaners--I use Dawn with a bit of baking soda as hand cleaner often..it'll clean parts too,but they must soak in it awhile..
Hot water and higher pressure also helps a lot..

Soda blasting will remove the oil residue and most paints, leaves a nice finish for painting.
