Hi guys, so my trans is out of my truck ,and I thought why not changeout the rear main seal. I have the flywheel off...So I have a question, do I NEED to have the trans OUT to get to this seal????? Or can I put my rebuilt trans back in and get to this seal from the pan area? How does this work? I don't want to put my trans back on and be screwed later! Its on my 75 k5! Thanks dudes!:thumb:

Pre '86 has a 2 piece rear main and can be changed with trans in. 86+ had a 1 piece in a housing at the back of the engine, and the flexplate has to be removed.

If the trans is out it's easier, but if it's not leaking now you can leave it and if it leaks later you can do it without dropping the trans.

Assuming it's the original engine...
I assumed mine was the right one and ordered the seal to have the trans guy put in when he was rebuilding the transmission and it was the wrong style. Mine should have been a 2 piece but it was a 1 piece.

I ask this also because when I call the parts stores, give them the year etc, it shows 2 listings, one for a 2 peice, and also a 1 peice, don't know what that's about? WTH?

You should have a 1 piece but could be either. You should do while the trans is out since its already leaking, it will be much easier. Since your gonna replace, remove and you will know if its a 2 or 1 piece.

When you switch to one of the one piece blue rubber gaskets does that make a difference about the trans being in place?

Yeah, the minute I found out it was a 2 peice I put the trans in... it dosent matter, the doner th350 I bought from some kid for 75 bucks.....I took it to my Trans guy and,,when he did the inspection, he found out it was a 1500 dollars racing trans, brand new crap everywhere,so I scored on that deal! It has a deep pan and everything. A pan that I chipped a small fin corner off, :doah::Dso there's the carnage of the day. Thanks for all the replies, you dudes rock!

No doubt.when the tranny guy offered to buy my trans, I said no way haha. Then again, if it wasn't for you giving me the wrong bolts to break it myself, it wouldn't have panned out this way, so thanks. Bub!:D

Hey, don't blame me, I gave you some bolts to see which ones fit, you are an adult, you check everything before you put it in the hole:whistle:
