closed or open end lug nuts what do you run and why.

Great I knew there was some thumb rule about stud size and nut length. Also isnt there supposed to be 1 1/2 the stud diameter stick out past the lug nut? Or is this just a racing thing.

Thanks,

Ira

I hate chrome ones. They're always soft, always peel, and always look bad. When I go to the junkyard I have a habit of taking any loose stock ones I can find.

Otherwise, some good stainless steel ones. But they're expensive.

I don't like closed ones either.

Tall chrome seems to be a bit cheaper (depending on the source of course) than a stock type which is strange.
I've liked the closed type to keep garbage off the threads to they don't get nasty. We always throw some lube chemical (often WD40) in them and have never had a problem. You do need to adjust your torque spec down when you lube the lugs.
I went to open nuts on this last batch of mods so the H2 hubcaps would fit over them. Stupid detail but I'm kind of attached to my hubcaps.

The tall nuts are handy sometimes since you can get to them a bit easier with different tools, even an endwrench if you have to.

whatever i can find at pick and pull, mostly open now, but i still have a few closed on there...

I like the idea of the tall lug nuts mainly due to the fact of thread engagment. I also prefer open lugs for looks plus as stated earlier I have had issues with closed lugs, however I prolly will not be twisting any 9/16 studs off in the near future. I will use anti-sieze on these new ones. I have DRW studs in rear and I am not sure how long of a stud I need also. Has anyone had any experience with the spline drive lug nuts?

Thanks for the input guys it really seems to come down to personal preference so these are the ones that I got cause

A. They are long enough to be adequate for a 5/8 stud.

B. They are open

C. They are not CHROME :D

The comment was made that closed ones keep out road grime and crap. I dispute that because every time I've taken off a closed one, it's been packed with de-icing salt and sand. Just my .02

thats because it does let stuff in, and traps it in there, bc it is closed. with that being said... on my blinged out DD blazer... i would run closed, it looks much better with all my chrome :D . if it were a trail rig, id probably run open

I have messed up the threads on the studs with open lugnuts before...sticks and rocks like to get in there a bugger things up... always carry an extra valve stem too. So now I run closed nuts on the wheeling rigs.

Yeah, been around forever.

I run open lugnuts and antiseize. I have my lugnuts on and off so much they never really have a chance to let the studs get rusty. On my Sonoma I used to run those Gorilla ones. I probably would run them on everything if they weren't so expensive.
