Hey all, my girlfriend was driving our Suburban and it started making a lot of noise. She pulled off into a lot and called me. It will make a "clunk clunk clunk" noise when driving forward or in reverse, the noise sounds similar to a rear end that's blown up. The Sub has no front driveshaft right now. I unhooked the rear drive shaft and the rear end is fine, so it's the t-case or transmission. I can spin the driveshaft by hand in the forward rotation and it will make clicking noises, but when I try to turn it in reverse it will not turn easily by hand. The noise sounds to be coming from the front of the transmission. The transmission gears will "lock in" just fine, and the fluid appears clean.

Is there anything I can check? Is it likely trash?

Thanks.

Check your bellhousing bolts to make sure they are tight and your flywheel to make sure it's not cracked.

I did a quick visual inspection and the bellhousing appeared to be tight against the block, although I haven't checked the torque of the bolts yet.

I was thinking, and here is a summary of the problem:

Rhythmic clunking when driving forward.
Rhythmic clunking when driving in reverse, but much worse than when in forward, and it seems to bind more.
Clunking noises when transmission in "N" with engine off and turning driveshaft by hand.

In drive or reverse it will make no noise sitting still. The clunking starts when it moves and will clunk faster as the vehicle speed increases. With the engine running and in "N" it won't make any noise.

It will clunk in 4Hi and 4Lo also, even with no front driveshaft.

It's a real loud noise and sounds like it shouldn't be driven anywhere.

....hmm...sounds like what my truck was doing...and i killed my ring gear.

Wehn you unhooked the d-shaft did you start it and let it drive?

I'd do that. have soembody in the cab and take a long extension put it next to your ear and the other end just start runnin it around stuff till you hear noise. (Think stethascope, SP?)

I unhooked the d-shaft at the differential but didn't slide it out of the t-case. I could turn it forward then by hand, but not in reverse. The noise it makes is real loud, and I'm not sure I would want it to spin freely with no d-shaft connected to the rear to stop it because of how "harsh" the clunking sounds.

pull the rear cover and take a look its cheep to check out i rebuild 1 4 10 bolts a week here at work
I swapped in a 14 SF a couple months ago, and everything seemed fine with it now when the d-shaft was unhooked.

It may take a few days or a week, but I'll try to get a video of it to post.

I doubt you blew a 14bsf , they have huge bearings and 33 spine stuff .

Betcha its the transfercase since it does it when turning by hand . Otherwise I would of said front halfshaft or unit bearing .

Ok, I finally got the Suburban trailered out to my parents house where I could test drive it without any traffic around, since my only test drive has been in a parking lot.

It locks into all gears solid and drives normally, but there is a real loud grinding noise in 1st, 4th, and reverse when moving.

The problem appears to be somewhere in the transmission, and is likely more than I am able to repair myself.

Random Idea (the only kind I have)

Would torque converter bolts that have backed out some cause this?

slip yoke. these trucks have bad problems with greaseing of slip yoke. i got a 96. mine did it bad. replaced u-joints, didnt help. but grease in slip yoke like everyone told me. went away. now its back but not 1/2 as loud becuase i didnt put enough grease.
