cluster question

Hi,
Im new to k5's and this site. I bought a 79 k5 a few weeks ago. I have got a 6" lift and 36" bias sx's on it now. I have a few questions though. first the gas gauge and speedo dont work. I cant figure out how to make one or the other work since I keep running out of gas. none of the cluster illuminators work either. I noticed a broken/ stripped wire on the drivers side of gas tank. also where can i find the crank thing for the back window. and lastly one of the headers leaks at the collector. not the flange but in the middle of the 4 pipes. thanks

Does anything on the cluster work?
Remove the dash bezel, than you can remove the cluster. You can then clean it all up,check the curcit sheet on the back, and replace all the bulbs.



I painted mine with chrome paint to make the lights brighter.
As for the speedo, check the cable the cable it could be striped or broken at the speedo or the transfer case.
On my '86 there is a small pink wire that runs back to the tank for the sending unit, check it.

yeah, the high beam indicators, the oil pressure gauge does sometimes i think, and the volt meter does. the temp doesnt and the clock doesnt, the interior lights work when the door opens or the headlight switch, but the cluster doesnt light up.
as far as the gas tank goes the wire is stripped of coating about 5 inches down

I recently had an issue with my '77 that would cause half of the backlights and the fuel gauge to quit working, but only with the headlights on. Oh, and the brights indicator would light up constant and dim, along with one blinker indicator. It turned out to be a bad spot in the printed circuit on the back of the cluster. I soldered in a small wire to bypass the bad spot.

I found the purple/pink wire its frayed about 6 inches out of the gas tank.... where is it supposed to go? behind the dash or somewhere.
