clutch fan

Depends on temperature.
The clutch locks up when it reaches a certain temp.
Until then it should turn fairly easy, either direction.

A bad fan clutch has leaking fluid and excessive play.

Another check is to run engine until it is good and warm, turn off engine and see if you can turn the fan. It should be locked if it's a warm day and the thermostat is open.

How bad is the clutch if you can stop it and spin it in the opposite direction?

I hope I am misreading - You didn't actually reach in, stop it and turn it while the truck was runnning, did You?

I stuck the end of a flashlight in and stopped it but didn't jam it in though and spun it by hand, while it was running.

Was the truck overheating at the time?

It's a *clutch* fan, if it's not overheating, it will do it's job and not be engaged.

Another option is have the hood up when you first start the rig in the morning (or after it's cooled off thoroughly) then start the engine, listen for the roar of the fan, then the roar should stop. If you listen for it, you'll hear it. (if it's working right)

As mentioned, loose fit/wobbly, evidence of fluid leakage are positive indicators the clutch has a problem.

dude thats just plain stupid.

there should be a good amount of resistance when the engine is cold and you try to turn the fan by hand (WITH THE ENGINE OFF!!!!)

if little or no resistance, then replace the clutch. I have a good pull off of my truck (I switched to electric fans) that i'd sell ya pretty cheap.

What kind of fluid is there in a clutch fan? Never heard of that. Anyway, when The engine is running I can barely feel any air from the fan.

Sorry for jumping in here. ccatlett1984 how did you like the electric vs the mech fan? I'm thinking of changing both Burbs to electric, but wanted to hear from someone who recently changed to see if it is worth it.

I currently have the truck apart swapping out the radiator, I have dual 14" fans that i will be mounting up. each pulls 2400cfm. one will be on a thermostat and the other will be on an in-cab switch for when extra cooling is needed.

The trucks temperature will get up to the temp of the thermostat and hold at idle if the fan is blowing enough air. The truck will get hot if there is no air movement due to a bad clutch.

Spinning that long after shut off is unusual, if the truck was at operational tempterature.

Is your truck getting hot or overheating at idle?
Does the temperature drop when you start driving?

If either or both occur, more than likely the fan clutch is bad.

For $50 or $60, replace it and have piece of mind that you have a clutch fan that is good.

Piece of advice, don't EVER reach in with any tool or device to stop a turning engine fan with the engine running.
