Clutch problems

Welp I finally got back on this since it's not raining today and I cant for the life of me get it to line up. I tried putting the bell on first but my input kept knocking the throw out off the fork. I tried to install as a complete unit bell on the trans and I cant get it to line up. Also I only have one floor jack so the motor is kind of sagging but that helped when I pulled it out or well I guess I should say dropped it out lol it broke a strap I was using as a backup in case it fell. How did yall get yours in?
 
Do you have the transmission in gear so that you can rock the input shaft to line up the splines? That's the only thing that I can think of besides visually lining it up. But that is sometimes difficult with everything tilted while lying on your back.
 
I got it stabbed!! I stopped for a minute and went back at it with a buddy and after about 10 minutes of hand crushing excitement, we decided to try to manhandle it the last inch into place and it just fell right in. Now I'm just gonna wait for daylight and finish putting it all back together
 
So I fired up the reaper before driveshaft install to make sure the clutch would disengage and it does but with the shifter in neutral the output still spins when I let on the clutch, is that normal operation? Clutch engaged but not in gear to be clearer. I dont want to put the shaft back in if its gonna have to come back out
 
I would bet that is just drag from the oil causing it to rotate. If you put the shaft in, it shouldn't try to move the truck.
 
I figured that might have been a sorta dumb question. In neutral nothing is lined up or engaged in the transmission right? Or did I just realize all my schooling was wrong But if nothing is engaged then it would just be kind of like a parasitic drag type thing then right? I do know in neutral the input still spins because it's splined with the clutch but I thought nothing engaged. Is that thinking wrong?
 
Okay so I shouldn't have to worry then. But hey 6872xtc, while you are here, any advice on hooking the speedo cable back up?? I couldn't get to it on the trans itself because of gunk buildup so I undid it on the frame and now it keeps trying to go in crooked
 
I don't believe that you should have to worry about the transmission, but more testing will confirm that. I don't recommend grabbing the output yoke while it is running, just in case!!

And are you talking about the cable itself? Or the nut for the housing?
The cable just would need a little twist as it's square, to line up.
The nut for the housing can be a challenge for your patience as it's ine of the last things when you're ready to be done, and the grease makes it a bitch! Some cleaner and scrubbing should help. It could have been cross-threaded once in the past, so getting it right could be a big challenge.
 
I figured it'd be a bit of a pain but I didnt realize it was a square. I thought it just had one flat side but I've also never taken one apart before this. But hey who need a speedo anyway


In your opinion would it be worth it to put a 3.55 rear axle gear in or would that cause problems? I'm tired of it screaming at me down the interstate. I dont know exactly what the rpms are because someone stole my tach before I put it in. My half ton had a 3.55 axle and it pulled anything I hooked it to. Almost 12k on the bumper once as an example
 
You can probably do fine with that gear ratio since you would be able to start out in low if needed, when loaded heavy. I don't know what exact ratio is available, but I would bet that finding it used will be very difficult. Around here, even a 3:73 is hard to find. But see what you can find.
 
I got her all finished up this morning and went for a test drive to the gas station and now I got a fuel delivery issue I cant win for losing with this truck. It was all fine and dandy before I started working on it too so I gotta dig more into it now
