Running an sm465 in the mud. Gone through a bunch of throw out bearings, and 2 discs. Any Ideas on how to keep it safe?

I have heard use the dust cover, and heard don't use the dust cover. What do you guys think?

There is usually a lot of standing water too.

I can't get images to upload now, but ill post some later to show the kind of stuff im in regularly.

That's what I thought, but everyone around here runs none. I also was worried about stuff getting stuck inside and not be able to get back out.

Sounds like Owenst7 started 4/20 a little early and has kept goin all day....

last time we had my ton out the inspection plate got torn off in a creek, got the clutch wet. Thats the only time ive ever had issues with one. I couldnt imagine not running one All the time after having that happen.

Use a clutch with non-organic material. centerforce makes discs that work well, at least the best I have found.

definitely run with cover on.

If you run a TH400 then all the clutches are sealed in tranny fluid and you don't have to worry about it.

Sorry I just had to say it. I am sure you like your manual so carry on.

I would run the cover if I were you. Just keep the drain hole clear at the bottom.

LOL! I almost replied the same when the post first popped up. didn't want to start another tranny war. I love the SM465. but I'd run a th400 in a dedicated mud or sand truck...

While im not gonna dispute the TH400 because its a great tranny, there are advantages and disadvantages to both and preference play an integral role. Personally I like the 465 and have not had problems running in mud or water, rock or sand. I have had the TH400 and it makes rock crawling, and mud running easy, and still gives you some control with a manual valve body.

I stopped using an Auto when I lost my tranny twice in the same year out on the trail. Yes it was under warranty but that doesn't help when your out in no mans land.

Ran a 465 after that and never looked back. Sold that rig and am building anew one, it will also have a 465.

Luk also makes some great clutches that some some guys I know run, they dont have trouble either.

Thanks guys, sounds like cover and a good clutch. I was running a sachs power clutch. I got a LUK Pro Gold series this time. It was what they gave me as a warranty. I was tossing the idea of an auto around, but I really like the 465.
