Ok so ive been searching for quite a while, both here and google, and ive decided its time to just ask. Im swapping in an sm465 shortly and need a flywheel and clutch kit for it. i have read about people having problems with cheap flywhels from parts stores (mainly autozone and advance) but i havent really found anyone saying what did work for them. Has anyone used an LMC flywheel and clutch set? or is there a decent setup that can be had from another parts store, I currently have access to autozone and O'reilly and napa, and back at home we have advance and pepboys. any help from the brotherhood would be greatly appreciated.

I've got an autozone flywheel (not sure on brand) but haven't had any problems. I'm running an externally balanced system... I also like to buy my clutch kits from autozone, they typically offer a lifetime warranty (I'm thinking it's a duralast).

thanks for the response man, i like the lifetime warranty as well. and they dont usually ask questions which is even better. i also just checked and it doesnt look like LMC even sells flywheels.. i guess ill give the autozone a try.

I run a Auto Zone flywheel....I've even had it resurfaced when changing clutches no issue's what so ever.

However the ONLY place I get clutches for my vehicle's is South Bend Clutch in Indiana.

I have an Advanced Auto flywheel in my truck but I have a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch which is the balls. You'd think it would make the pedal heavy but not at all. The holding power is great too

Luk pro gold FTW.

That being said I bought a Hays "diesel puller" clutch, diaphram style, 12.25" diameter. It works quite nicely, and pedal is not too heavy.

Just stay away from the Borg & Beck three finger clutch...absolutely brutal pedal effort, and they chatter easily.

X2 on avoiding a three fingered 12" Borg & Beck style,I had really bad luck with three of them when I swapped a SM 465 in my '72 K5 years ago--all of them chattered " badly, number one shook the cab off the mounts from day one--the second one failed while stopped at a red light with my foot holding the pedal down in first gear, and when the pressure plate failed the truck lurched forward and hit a nice red Corvette parked in front of mre!..thought the guy was going to KILL me!..number 3 went south about 3 months after I installed it,it chattered from day one slightly, and got progressively worse, until one day I couldn't put it in gear with the engine running no matter how I adjusted it...--I was ready to put the TH350 back in it!..

I ended up buying a USED " diagphram type Hayes clutch from a guy at a swap meet for 50 bucks that had been driven only 1000 miles and looked new--I took a gamble, but it paid off--the pedal pressure was SO light compared to the 12" three fingered pressure plate I thought it was junk the first time I stepped on it,but the think clamped up nicely,no chattering or slippage, and I beat the daylights out of that truck for 8 years after I put that one in,never a problem..the 12" 3 fingered clutches felt like you needed both feet on the clutch pedal to depress it in comparison!..

I bought a LUK clutch setup for the '86 VW Jetta diesel I had at Pep Boys,it worked nice and I never had any troubles with it...that was the only LUK one I've used though--every vehicle I have owned since has an automatic in it..

I put a LUK 12inch clutch and pressure plate in a 78 short box I had with a 454, beat the hell out of it with no problems at all... but the front and rear end were a different story.:D

I like the LUK as well. I have ran no name flywheels from Lincoln Clutch and Brake in Lincoln Nebraska, and used GM flywheels, never any expensive one, and have never had any troubles with them.

Has anyone ran a puck clutch. I guy wants me to put one in his plow rig, and im thinking I want to stay with Luk

I never tried one,but have driven a few larger trucks that had one installed for plowing, one was a IHC 1600 Loadstar--there is no "riding" one of those clutches, its either engauged or disengauged,it is ON or OFF,and take offs are a lurch ,especially on hills..but that was the only clutch that truck didn't eat in a year or less, before they put that one in it ,it needed a new clutch every spring...

I had a puck clutch in my first cummins I owned years ago, and everything he said about them are true. IN or OUT.

i got a luk 12 inch from napa.10 years and still goin strong.had them resurface the one i had when i replaced the old clutch.they work good and have a soft push to them.that is my vote.

i have heard good things about LUK clutches but ive never personally tried one. i guess ill give pepboys a call ( i think they sell LUK) and get a price before i go to auozone.

Thank you very much for all the responses

You will be happy with Luk. Luk even make a lot of the OE clutches and haven't seen many failures over the years

LuK clutches are great. If you look closely at a centerforce disc, you'll find the Luk stamp on the inner ring. I've many of them and they hold up very well.
