Tonight I was sitting at the party store, the truck surged like it was going to stall and it did. I restarted drove home, while sitting in the driveway is surged again and about stalled and it recovered on its own. I got a code 15 set? What's your thoughts on code 15?

TPI TBI CCC troubleshooting, data (codes, wiring, swaps etc)
11-11-05
Updated with ALDL cable links

OK, finally got the time/inclination to do something for those that don't have service manuals, or those that do and just don't want to scan this stuff in, or want to read it at work, etc. :)

As you will see, Trickster over on thirdgen.org has been nice enough to scan all of these charts in. Be forewarned, these are F-body diagrams, so you TBI/CCC folks should be careful, but you will find most things are identical I'm sure.

Not complete of course, but at least everything I could find is now in one post. I will update as I find more. PM me (if you can) and have more charts to add, that way the thread doesn't get bogged down with responses unnecessarily.

Chevythunder code/troubleshooting list

I can't vouch for those. Not factory scans, but look to be the same info in a slightly different format.

1990 R/V truck wiring diagrams

ALDL pinout

ALDL cable scematics

Ignition system test This is for TPI, but should be pretty close to TBI as well. Some of the tests I guarantee are.

Identifying TPI system differences

Vehicle repair guides Check these out for wiring diagrams, etc. Can't vouch for how good the quality is, but I see that our trucks are listed.

TBI

O2 Open circuit

Codes 15/23/32 CTS coolant temp low/MAT sensor low temp/EGR

Code 24 VSS

Code 42 EST

Code 43 EST

TPI

MAF wiring diagram

MAP interior harness connector pinout

Codes 15/45 coolant temp/O2 sensor 2.8L port

Code 23 Inlet Air Temp (IAT) low temp indicated

Code 24 VSS

Code 32 EGR

Codes 33/36 MAF gm/sec high and MAF burnoff

Code 34 MAF gm/sec low

Code 41 Cylinder Select Error

Code 42 EST

Code 44 O2 lean

Code 54 Fuel pump circuit low voltage

CCC

Code 23 M/C Solenoid volts low to ECM

Code 24 VSS

Code 32 Baro sensor

Injection specific:
crank no run 1

crank no run 2

External coil, pickup testing

MAP voltage/baro/vacuum chart

C100 (fuse panel) connector '85/89 Camaro

I also have the entire GM TBI/TPI troubleshooting sections, '89 Camaro, in .pdf (about 2MB each) if someone is interested in hosting those somewhere that I can point people to, PM if so. The TBI Camaro stuff is identical to truck in almost every regard.

"1985" K5: Vortec Headed Roller 355/MAF TPI/32 spline 465/205/10B-14SF/3.42's/33". Will be converted to MAP TPI in the future.

1987 K5: 350/TBI/700R4/208/10B F/R/3.73's/31" Someday will assimilate the "1985" drivetrain.

The answer to your carburetor problem is fuel injection.

Awesome collection of info frankin5 :thumb:

As linked in the previous post it's says it's a coolant temp sensor fault. It looks like a very simple circuit so I'd say it's either the sensor itself or issues with wiring. I'd check the wiring, particularly making sure the contacts on the sensor are cleaned (and add a thin coat of dielectric grease).

Thank Dorian:waytogo:

SO the connector I found corroded and frayed wire, So I cleaned everything and soldier a new connector on and hopefully it has fixed the problem....

A simple and free fix is always nice. Did you put some dielectric grease on it to prevent that from happening again?

indeed, I am a firm believer in that dielectric grease...

Nothing fun at the party store, when there to use the back of the building to adjust my plow light alignment...

Truck stalled at a light when the wife was driving the truck. When scanned code 15 showed again. I guess its time to change our the temp sensor unit??

Believe you will have to register, but the ohm vs. temp specs are listed on the troubleshooting flow charts at this link: http://www.gearhead-efi.com/gearhead-efi/doc/TBIcodes.pdf

Scantool is helpful here, since you can watch the temperature to see if it is "bad".

These things have no moving parts, but they can fail. Does the code immediately reset if you clear it? If not, perhaps tapping the intake near it will cause it? I'd be worried it's a connector or wire somewhere else if it's not constant.

I will have to investigate further. You mentioned tapping the intake near the sensor..... I thought the sensor was the one in the side of the head, which I guess more I think about it, the one in the head is probably the gauge on the dash.

Temp Sending unit=1 wire=gauge.

Temp Sensor=2 wire=ECM.

You are correct. I plan to go with a three wire combo sender/sensor at some point, it appears GM made one a bit later that will work.

So where is the temp sensor located on a 1990 k5 TBI

Make sure you get the sensor, and not the sending unit

wow, I read this, then went to post and 5 other comments were already up,,, a bit late here. :doah:
