Code 32 EGR UPDATE 10/19/06

I've replaced all the sensors, every last one is brand new. The results are exactly the same with both old and new sensors - believe me I've swapped every single sensor back and forth. Haven't tried the vac gauge while driving check myself but 3 different shops have tested this EGR system vacuum and claimed everything checked out. They were all at a loss to explain the code light.

All that is left would be the manifold passages. At a minimum it's worth pulling just to verify one way or another.

Did you ever pull your manifold? How did the passages look? I've got the same thing going, plus, mine won't pass smog.

Thanks,

Eric M.

No Eric, never have had a chance or space to get it done.

This Saturday my garage will be emptied of the last musclecar project. That means I'll finally have space to work inside. I did go down and get a smog test. I had to have a "special" inspection and now carry a registered form for future testing because of the TBI modification. I stood there while they put the sniffer on and crawled around the engine compartment. I'm a little lean at idle but otherwise it passed.

AZBlazer (Doug) swears it must be in the manifold. He's pretty good with the TBI set-ups.

I sure as heck don't know what else it could be and neither do the mechanics I paid to double check.

if you think the manifold is blocked take off the valve and start the engine, if the passage is blocked you will not get exaust flow, if the passage is fine you will get loud noise and smoke, this can also help clean the passage out. I used to do this on my CPI s-10 which had a common problem with carbon build up, finnaly a few cans of seafom cured the problem

wouldn't it be easier to just pull vacuum on the EGR valve itself when the motor is idling to open the valve and see if you stall out the motor? You can even open the valve by hand if you are careful....

I can stall it by manually squeezing the EGR valve with my fingertips.

Like I have said, it's a ghost light. No one has been able to figure it out. ALDL light just comes on at cruise and then stays on as long as the truck is running. It doesn't affect emissions, or engine operation. All system components are functioning. Good mechanics are stumped and so am I.

Unless it's some type of wiring issue with the Painless harness or an ECM table issue because it's on a truck it wasn't originally designed for.

None of the CK5'ers around here are TBI experts and none of the shops can seem to diagnose it.

I had basically the same problem. Nothing I did would fix it. I finally popped the chip out, gave it to a buddy of mine, and he removed the EGR, check engine light command lol.

I did the vortec head conversion to my 87 tbi motor and I would get a code 32 when I would just cruise my Blazer. I changed all of my sensors also and It passed the emissions test with flying colors Of course I would have to disconnect the battery to clear the code, But my problem finally went away after I purchase a heated 02 sensor no more code 32!

That's interesting, where was your 02 bung located? Mine is down on the header collector.

Is your O2 sensor a heated style? Imperative to have one when it's located down on the collector.

You need to install a heated 3-wire O2 sensor.

Without going into great detail, the exhaust gases cool by the time they hit the collector which will throw the sensor's reading off.

I can almost assure you that will solve the egr code problem and make the engine run better (because the ecm is getting correct values).

At the stock location, I'm still using the stock manifolds and it runs great!

I'll give it a shot and let you know, thanks for the advice. Here's something I found over on CFM-Tech that reaffirms your suggestion:

Hey, I've gotten help from forums throughout the net, wouldn't be right if I knew something and didn't say anything.

One thing I will warn you of, make sure you don't run the + power (white) wire st8 to the battery or a constant power source. It'll burn out the O2 sensor and could cause a fire. Make sure you find a wire that's hot in both run & start position of the key.

Good luck...

True...

Just didn't want to confuse him with some of the problems that can occur when fishing around for a hot wire.

Obviously the O2 sensor isn't that critical to having a 5-15 second drop of voltage but hey, I think you'll agree we've all had one of those head scratching moments where something just didn't make sense....lol

Fixed mine.

I broke down and took it to a shop. It was 5 months past due for registration and along with the EGR error, wasn't passing smog.

Bad ground for computer sensors. There are 2 wires which ground to the intake behind the altinator. They were a cruddy, rusty mess. They fixed the ground, replaced the air pump and cat and it past smog with flying colors and so far, no more SES light for EGR 32 error.

Worth a try ... plus, it's cheap!

Good Luck,

Eric M.

What is the best way to wire a 3 wire sensor where a single wire sensor had been.I am also running headers (no cats) but running a little rich.
