sometimes stalls in reverse ,idles high.and rough..runs great cold once hits running temp surges once then check engine light comes on and problems start... replaced vaccum hose and replaced 2way valve..replaced egr valve and egr solenoid about 3 months ago..any advise?? 1987 5.7 tbi

The last time I got code 42 the pickup coil in my distributor was dying and shortly died. Could also be the ignition module going out.

after going thru all connections in system i found one wire splice from ignition coil that may have been bad...fix that wire cleaned all connection ..cleared code...drove it 4 times for about 20 miles no more code..fingers crossed

darn code popped back up!!! driving around this morning starting idling funny again.check code..42 again..i got a accel hipower ignition coil on it but its been on for months..think it could be the emc going bad?

Ignition module or pickup coil in the dizzy are what I'm thinking first. The ecm's are pretty robust.

And if you are going to try the distributor, buy a complete one. They are cheaper than all the parts individually, and the pickup coil is a pain requiring you to remove the distributor anyway.

Not saying throw parts at it, but if you are going the ignition route, the complete distributors are hard to beat.

picked up new ignition mod. the code is intermediate runs great after cool down and rest code..going to run her around farm til it throws code again then replace mod..fingerscrossed
