An old machinist told me this one. He told me for really rusted screws-he would soak the part overnight in either Coke Cola or Pepsi. I have heard Diet Coke would work also. I tried it a few times, but the problem I’ve with this trick is the cola would bead off if I tried to pour it on. I have to find a way to keep the fluid where I need it.
Anyway, I was tearing apart an NP205 last week when I got stalled on the front yolk. It was rust welded to the front output shaft. I put so much strain on it with a gear puller, one the ears started to break off, and the yolk still wouldn’t budge. I look at it and notice the yolk would make a perfect bowl if I lay the case on its back, so that is what I did. I went to the refrigerator and pull a half empty can of flat Diet Coke. I poured it in the yolk and went to work. The next day, I noticed the cola was gone, so it must have drained down the spines of the yolk. I took out my gear puller again, and hit it with my impact wench. The yolk didn’t come off as easily as I hoped but it came off.

I remember that trick from when I was a kid. I was on my grandfathers farm and I was "helping" him work on a silo unloader. Anyone who has been around one of these knows how bad they can get due to the moisture & humidity in a siol. Anyways, he sent me in the house to have grandma run to town and get 2 liters of Coke for him. When she got back, (I got a cap gun too :)) he poured the coke on the rusted bolts, though I don't remember what kept the soda in place. The next day, the bolts came off.

I'll always remember that story, for a few reasons. Man I miss that great man :wink1:

I've had much better luck with heating up the parts and spraying some WD40 on it.
Caution: Not so hot as to burn the '40, but enough to get it to flow real well.

I have used this trick also, but the cola trick could be a lot less work. I probably would keep using the torch and WD40 if I'm short on time.

What if you encapsulated the area in play-dough (sp) and make sorta like a cup out of it and then plugged all little holes around where the cola could leak out. Just a thought.

wouldnt pb blaster be easier? lol

coke works best hot. but if you get Kano oil, its even better.

I use a product that can't be bought on the open market, meaning I am not supposed to have it. It is called PN-105, a little spray of that and any bolt will come out quickly. Best test I ever had was the screw that is in rear drums on a Furd. Tried impact screw driver, everything, then sprayed it came out fifteen minutes later and spun it by hand. Good stuff but a little expensive when I get it.
