hello all. well i got a problem here i have changed my thermostat 3 times now all 195 stats i got cardboard on the grill and coolant is at around -35c for a rating and still she does not come off of cold and the heater blows just warm air the guage moves a bit so i think the sender is fine. the rad is a monster its the biggest you can get in there. but i think she should still warm up a bit. the temp outside is around -18c is there somthing im missing does anyone else have this problem? advice would be great.
 
Pretty sure your thermostat should be higher. Some one else should chip in, but I think you need about 210 or so.

4X4High should hop in with any luck and correct me if I'm wrong.

Otherwise, I guess you are just going to have to take off the fan. :D

Also, if you have a clutch fan, make sure its not frozen up. With the engine cold, it should freewheel fairly well.
 
I'm sort of in the same situation with my truck. Big diesel radiator, big block fan (I think the clutch never unlocks either), no thermostat, no inner fenders and a temp of 20*. I have a mechanical gauge in the drivers side head.

At first I tried a piece of cardboard behind the radiator. Figured the fan wouldn't pull the air through to cool it. This worked good at idle...but as soon as I started driving it would cool right back off and not register on the gauge.

I tried completely blocking the front of the radiator...this worked well. Too well in fact, it would get up to temp quickly, even stay around 190* if I was just idling around town. But as soon as I got moving down the road with the RPM's up it would continue to climb.

After some trial and error I found that a small opening in the cardboard (6"x6") was enough to keep it cool but still allow it to come up in temp.

I'd suggest moving some cardboard to directly in front of the radiator to see if that lets it warm up some more.
 
I had/have the same issue and had talked about it a few times on here. My truck is currently back in north eastern Indiana. I had the cooling system setup for heavy duty cooling when it was here in Arizona, 4 core radiator, heavy duty fan clutch, the thing will not get up to normal operating temperature. I put some material in front of the grille to prevent direct moving airflow into the engine compartment, replaced the t-stat as well, nothing.

One of the guys at Napa i bought the t-stat, said they do sell a 205* t-stat, i was thinking of trying out, never got around to it before the truck decided it didn't like the cold weather either. I also put cardboard directly up against the radiator as well, about 2/3 of the surface is covered, it did get a bit warmer, but not up to where it should have been.

Take off the engine driven fan blade, install an electric unit that only turns on when hot enough. This '05 Avalance i have been driving for the past few months has this setup on it, and it warms up pretty quickly.

I've always run a 210 tstat in carbed trucks in Alaska or they don't quite run correctly.

FWIW: I had a Windstar dual fan setup on my Blazer and it warmed up quickly and stayed at operating temp. Had them setup to come on at 180* and 200* The k5 had a thinner radiator though, so I'm sure that helped a little bit too.

I'm sure my current truck would warm up better if I put a thermostat in. The guy I got the motor from had it in one of his circle track cars. I've just been too lazy to put one in...that and it's cold out.
