ok, the temp here is supposed to get to -20 below tonight. i have to drive to IF in the morning, (i live near idaho falls, in rexburg) we get as much snow at home, but not this cold. any tips on what i should do to warmup my ride? i have a vortec 350, and i dont want to break anything starting it. how long should i let it warmup, etc? sounds like a stupid question, but its my only ride and expensive at that.

It gets -20 here. Only goning to be -2 tonight. I run 5-30 syn oil in the winter. When its -0. I Usualy let my K5 warm up till the windows defrost. It must work. My K5 has been in this cold country all its life. 20 years old always starts, and still running orginal engine and trans.
If you are really worried about it starting with thick oil. Run a drop light out to your truck and hang it down by the oil pan. It will help to keep your oil a little warmer.

Simple you call me we go wheeling in the morning and then your rig will be all warmed up, LOL I am in IF wanna go wheeling on saturday.

For real though, get in start it up, I don't rev the motor at all till I see the oil pressure come up to regular pressure, then drive. Thats all
 
I really feel sorry for you guys

I feel your pain. It's going to get down to the 30s here tonight and it was only in the mid-60s during the day.
 
Went wheeling Sunday and it hit 50 deg F just north of Anchorage:crazy: . It was great fun with standing water on top of the ice. I got some cool video of me spinning the burb around in circles like the monster trucks do:D. Problem is, the video is 8mm and I don't have the capabilities to convert to digital.
 
well im running 5w-30 oil. it did really great. hardly acted like it was cold, just a little slow cranking, but the oil built almost instantly. tranny took a second longer then usual, but otherwise, its good. i knew gm was a good choice! :laugh: one niggle: it made a grinding noise for a few seconds after startup, kinda like gears clashing, couldnt figure out what it was.:confused::doah: btw, it got to -18 here last night. wind chill was -38. brr

sorry, im a poor by choice college student. i mean that the yukon sitting in the parking lot does a lot of sitting. maybe in feb, though, ill have money then. theres a coulple guys in my apartment complex that also wheel, but im the only gm wheeler here
 
That grinding noise would be your bearings all hammering till they got some oil flowing though them...

My 80 used to make some pretty sick noises when she'd fire on the first crank at -40. I often thought about intentionally screwing up the choke when it was that cold so she'd crank for bit first to get the oil flowing before it fired.

is that bad, i mean, is it like old oil or something, or is that just what chevys do?
 
Just what happens when you start an engine with no oil pressure, lol I usually got 3 - 4 good hard knocks outta it before the oil made it through the whole truck. Didn't seem to hurt it any though, the bearings looked brand new when I had the engine apart a while back.
 
ill shoot a video of it tomorrow morning so you know exactly what im talking about. it sounds like gears clashing in a semi truck for several seconds
 
That is definitely a strange sound... That definitely isn't the bottom end of the engine! I'd be checking the bearings on all my accessories, idlers etc
 
yeah, im hoping its not my starter, i just replaced the thing not 2 weeks ago.
 
Maybe alternator, A/C compressor, or belt tensioner bearings. I have same kind of noise on my 5.9CTD. Comes and goes, don't know exactly where it comes.
 
Unhappy oil pump.

My D max makes the same sound on a -10 to -20 startup. It is just really stiff oil not blowing the bypass valve for the oil filter open for a second.

I wouldn't get really worried.
 
The only thing I heard was an unhappy power steering pump. My Toyota P/U, burb, and my wife's Intrepid make the same sound when the temp reaches negative teen temps.
