Column Problem, HELP

Well, I need to have the rest of this stuff out today. The very last thing I need to do gives me a problem. I have a tilt column in my 87 K5 with a
700R4 and its giving me problems. The little lever that goes to the shift linkages gets in the way of me pulling the column out. Here are some pics if you dont know what I'm talking about.

Can someone please help me, I did everything my book said, but it didnt say anything about that little thing.

should be a large rubber boot held to the firewall with a bunch of 10mm or 3/8 headed bolts. its shaped kinda like a triangle. take it off, and the column will come right out.

Yep just did a colum swap a month ago. Pull back the carpet and you will see the boot.
