oh and what do they mean by "flat tappet cam"?

the lifters are flat where the meet the cam which is different from a roller (which has rollers).
you will generally void any cam warranties if the recommended springs and lifters aren't used.. not that it wont work fine...
$400, what kind of cam and lifters are you looking at?? That's aftermarket roller lifter price territory.
me and a friend have had bad luck with comp lifters. but cam and federal mogal lifters work great.
less than 5k miles bad lifters and flat lobes. but comp cam and fed lifters o.k. still running great.

my buddy has had bad luck with the federal mougal lifters, lasted like 2000 miles. put comp lifters in and no problems. i run comp lifters in all my motors. works just fine.
i believe the lifters void the warenty, but the springs are just a recomendation don't void the warrenty. if i miss read the instructions, then all my cams are void if the cam takes a ****. i use the Z28 spings.

I *thought* that almost all lifters were made by FM anyways. I'm curious to hear if anyone knows differently.
On top of that, how many have actually had a cam fail due to manufacturer defect immediately after fire up? Not starting an argument, I thought about that when warranties were brought up.

federal mogul's lifter and bearing plant is 11 miles from my house. ill have to ask someone who works there.
they are not the same as comps lifters. if you have the 2 side by side, there are major differneces.

Comp cams had a bad run of heat treated billets allthough you will never here it from them. If you don't break/run the cam in correctly ,any cam but a roller , you will most likely have flat lobe in few thousand miles.
Flat tappet lifters refers to mechanical ie solid lifters then you have hydralic flat tappet and roller lifters.
Lots of good info on Comp cams web page and good description on how to break in a new cam.
Also the cam specs normaly determine which springs you need.
