I originaly posted this in the interior section, but it was on an old thread.

My question is this, while I know anything is possible, I would like to know what you fellas think about me swaping everything out of my 97 1500, the engine, dash, wiring, tranny, everything into my 91 k5?

The 97 is 2wd, but the tranny shop said that they could swap out the output shaft of the 4l60, to the 4l60e, and my np 241 would bolt right up.

I would gain power and reliability, and a few other comforts aforded by the 97, and I think it would be a cool swap, not easy, but I would have all the dash gauges working without having to mod anything.

Getting te dash in there would be hard, but I would have all the wiring there so it would seem to be a snap after that.

So what do you think?:D

Do a search, there was one on here where the dash was done. Talked about how much he had to cut to make it fit. Looked real good also.

Did you get that tranny shop to give you a quote? Although it only requires a swap of the output shaft, the tranny has to be dismantled pretty much all the way to do so. Assuming the 4l60s are internally identical to a 700R-4. If you're still gonna do it, may as well do a rebuild.

No idea on the inside part. :o

Thanks for the replies fellas. I saw the thread for the dash, and it did look good. As for the tranny, they said they would do it for about 225. as far as a rebuild, the tranny has 1500 miles on it

It seems like it would work, I think that I would want to alter the firewall to look like the one off the 97, so that the wiring harness and the havac plumbing will be in the correct place.

HVAC is going to be a challenge. Your truck has manual slide levers, the 97 has electronic knobs.

Besides that though, just realize it is going to be 1000x more involved than you think it is. Can be done, but most give up short of a full swap. Someone on here did it, but made custom gauges in teh stock dash.

good luck!

You are 100% correct. It will be hell to complete. According to the thread you mentioned, he had to cut off 5-6" from the late model dash to fit. My fear is that by doing this, will all the hvac equipment move with it, and what can I do to make it fit.

I saw how he did the gauges, and I did not like it, thats not to say he didn't do good work, it just was not something that I would want.

As far as it being hard to do, I have nothing but time on my hands, I think that if I strip the Blazer of everything, label and strip everything out of the 97, and reinstall it in the Blazer, it should work. The dash is going to be hell, but everything else will bolt up. The 97 has dual headlights, so does the 91. the blazer has a 350, 4l60 and 241, the 97 has a 350, 4l60e, and I can (after moding the tranny) bolt up the 241.

I think that even if the hvac equipment is moved forward, I can mod the firewall to mirror the 97, and everything should fit, and look clean, which is what I am going for.

BTW Tech, your truck is sooooooooo cool, man. I followed yours there for awhile, and loved it man, are you done with it yet?

Thanks, not yet.
The interior is done. About to take the motor apart to rebuild it. Also working on the chassis getting all the stuff done to it before I get it all powdercoated. Work has been slow, so not alot of extra money for it , at this time. So progess has had to slow down. :( Still lots to do finding all the right stuff after all these years apart.

I bet it's tough, I still like the way it looks so far. And I here you on the funds, their hard to come by these days.

I don't have a shop to work in, and broke on top of that, it just sucks. But, I'll get my act together and try to get this done.

I am surprised however, that there is not much responce to this thread, I guess it sounds like a better idea to me than everybody else. It's all cool though, as long as I think it's cool, I'm good, as long as I finish it, and it don't burn to the ground after I'm done. :haha:

Yup you just got to finish it if you start. No turning back
