Does anyone know the symptoms of a bad computer chip or how to test them? (86 K-5, 350 w/ Q-jet, and 700r4)

Well, you wouldn't have a chip in an '86 unless its the computer controlled Q-jet.
Post up your problem dude. As far as I know the 'chip' doesn't go down but it takes it's info from everything around it so something there could be wrong. ECU's do screw up however. Post up your symptoms.

it is computer controlled and a california truck
The symptoms is that when it comes to climbing grades the truck has no power. Its got a new jasper 350 and 4:88's in both axles running on 35's and I've also already put in a new ECU. Could it maybe be a bad coil or something?

Still got the cats on it?? If so could be plugged. If FLA isn't one of those states that does emissions, I would rip that crap off. There are hills in FLA????

Yes its still got the cat but I've had that replaced. I'm going to be putting on headers and true duals shortly. But as for taking the cats off, I would but I'm stationed out here in FL and if I end up back in Cali I'll have to put them back on. Also won't running with no cats mess up the computer?
I don't even know the reason for a computer on a non injected engine, other than to screw things up. No cats shouldn't do anything the computer, only if the O2 sensor is after them, which shouldn't be on that year. Out of curiousty, where in FLA are you??

It does have an o2 sensor. I am at Eglin AFB near Ft Walton Bch. About 45 miles east of Pensacola
As long as it's before the cat, you can take them off. I was in P-cola for about a year in school wow, 14 years ago. Wholy crap time flies. It sounds like you have enough motor and gears, what tranny are you using?? Timing right, no loose vac lines, good fuel pressure???

Its got a 700r4, timings right, no loose vacuum lines, don't know about fuel pressure. How do you check that?
Sounds like carderation or timing from what you're saying. Has it always been like this, did it 'just happen' or did it happen after you did some work?

One symptom of a dead ECM is the limp mode, which is full rich on the primaries, all the time. Typically black smoke/soot out the pipes, and horrible gas mileage. (pretty tough to tell that in a truck though lol) In my car though, freeway and city driving netted the same (bad) mileage, which was a good indicator something was wrong.

It just started happening a few weeks ago, haven't really done anything to it since the new engine was put in and the timing is right on.

On a CCC carb, key on, engine off, as I recall, you should hear the MC solenoid clattering away in the carb. It may only do this for a few seconds after turning the key, it's been a long time since my CCC setup was running.
