Just want to be sure I understand this correctly.

These are D44 external locking hubs

and these are D44 internal locking hubs

Yes?

I know it's a dumb newbie question, just want to be absolutely sure on the terminofraseology so I buy the right thingy for my 80. Thanks!!

Can't really say if they are for a 44 or not as there is nothing to gauge the size of them off of. Having said that the top ones are external and the bottom ones are internal:D.

This is exactly why I wanted to confirm.

Everything I've read says that Gm stopped using the external D44 hubs in either '76 or '78. However . . . .

My 1980 K20 has a D44 front axle with the TOP style locking hubs.

Is this a good thing or bad thing?

ive heard theyre weaker but not sure on that, never tested or anything. it sounds like your axle got swapped in. youll need the externals then cause they have the bigger hub.

My '77 k20 has the bottom style. IIRC '76 was the last year for the external style. If an '80 model has them, something's been swapped.

The externals like to come loose a lot more than the internals. The six bolts holding them on will come loose than shear the bolt off inside the hub. Use lock washers and some locktite and check them after every off road excursion.

I agree with this, the externals where ditched in the mid 70's and 1980 I pretty sure should have a 10bolt, not a D44 under the front. I run the externals Milemarkers on a D44 1974 K20 hub, and never have had them come loose or break, lots of other stuff broken like right now:(,. If you are sure its a D44 with externals, its been swapped out if the truck is in the 80's for sure.
