connecting two batteries underhood

someone explain how to run two batteries to where it stays 12v ?

in series is not how to do it right ?

would be parallel eh ?

i forgot how to connect either its been too long since science class, hum,.

series gives 24v

parallel - positive to positive, negative to negative = 12 volts
