Considering a New Tow rig

Thats pretty badass, but price seems pretty high with a dead engine though.

Would be a good place to put the engine and trans that are in that dodge now.

yep thats what I was thinking and then lower it about 6" and run 35's

I also have a 6.5 I could drop in to get it running again

Its been for sale at this price for 2 years now so he may be more motivated to sell for a lower price . My buddy did all the work and its top notch

It does look really well put together, and I agree with lowering the thing too.

IMO thats lifted way to high to be as functional as it could be.

A Semi with a sleeper on it would probably be better IMO. You could use it to go down to NM and pick up all your trucks to with a 9 car double decker trailer. I'd imagine it would tow alot nicer to.

Fuel Mileage, Insurance, registration , Its not cost effective .

I have a 74 Peterbilt 362 with 600hp Cummins in it but its just not viable "tow rig"

It would, but as I learned the hard way, you shouldn't own everything you might need once in your lifetime.
In his case, he has the semi, but if it's unreliable, he could recruit the help of another CK5er... and rent a car hauler trailer and move his cars once, but then he won't need it again for a long time and he doesn't have to keep up wih reg, ins, and storage of the big rig.
I pay $2500 a year for registration, $7500 insurance, and $1200 in parking.
If I wasn't using it all the time, it's a big expense.:doah:
That chevy is nice, and I would definitely put a cummins in it if I got it, but I am biased to the earlier body style which I already have a bunch of.
As for the price, I say even with a bad engine, it's worth about $5000 or so.

The truck is reliable as a stone ax its just to expensive to operate :doah:

well that and the Hendrickson "suspension" would rattle my kidneys loose :eek1:

I take it it's not a hendrickson air suspension?
cause my hendrickson air suspension rides like a dream.
But guessing from the age "1974" probably not air?
I don't think I will ever willingly ride in a big rig without air ride.:eek1:
Not even my chevy crew cab rides that smooth.:dunno:

Yeah its an Old Rubber pad Hendrickson rough as a cob

when I stretch the wheelbase out to 300" it will get a Peterbilt Air-leaf suspension setup.

The cab will get Air ride as well. it has air ride seats already

I'll also be ditching the Daytons for 24.5 Alcoas

And I'll be ditching the K-model Cummins for a 14 ltr Detroit Series 60

Yeah I have air ride suspension, cab is on air bags, and my seats are air ride.
I even have all the bags and shocks changed this year, only ones not new are seat shocks.
I have a 236" whelbase, not too bad.

236" would be nice, 300" is probably way overkill for a cabover but it should work ok
I'll probally add a lift axle as well at some point. I have a Wet kit I need to install so I can pull my end dump. when we build the new house

I am still debating wether to put a wet kit or not, for now I do OTR and more weight means less capacity for me and now I can take any load available. If things change in the consruction business and I feel I could get any work, I would.
ANd yeah on a COE the wheel base isn't really going to make much difference since you are right on top of the front axle.:doah:

I wouldn't even consider trying to use this truck OTR I'd go broke in a week paying for fuel !!!

I had a really nice 78 359 with a 3408 Cat and 13spd OD and 4spd Brownie 270" wheelbase Wet Kit and Lift axle and a winch rack. for when I was renting my D7 to the forest service on fires, and logging in the winter .

My dad gave me this truck and 20,000 for the 359 so I could pay off some bills when I got divorced

Oh you were divorced? sorry to hear.
That 359 seems to have been a nice truck.:eek1:

Yeah I got divorced about 8 months after I started work in AK

The 359 is a nice truck someday I'll get it back, all my dad uses it for recovery of of trucks and equipment . the trucks really to heavy to try to use as a road truck Like you said above that extra weight cuts into your payload.
