I have been on a hunt to find the right parts to fix my tailgate window for about 4 months, and I am still at a loss. The manual regulators that I can find are junk, the power regulators are lacking in parts that nobody has. So I am thinking of shelling out the dough to get a sweet soft top. Anybody have experience with them? I am wheeling on a budget and I want to get the most bang for my buck, but I don't want something that won't last for many years. The truck stays under a carport, but when I take it out, it can get pretty messy.

One other thing you may consider is finding an entire tailgate from craigslist or a junkyard.

All that I really need is a quality manual window regulator or the plate that links the motor and cable to the power regulator. But so far it has eluded me, I have not even been able to find a proper diagram of the tailgate on a k5, not even from the dealer. So I could not even tell you what the plate is called, I just know there is one.

BTW, the LMC diagram is not a good diagram, and their manual regulator is junk

I hear you. Personally, I hate dealing with the rear window and I get a headache thinking about all the related seals, regulators, etc., that need replacing on mine.

I love the idea of a soft top, except that it is not as secure, and I usually end up parking on the street.

I went ahead and ordered a soft top from soft toppers just now, should be in by Friday so I can go to Muddy Gras, I park under a carport at my house, so it's no big deal for security

I went pu tailgate and never looked back.. fock that monstrosity on the back of the K5's..

Hey Ryoken, new idea for the GURU of garage fab. What about making a rear flipup gate like the old broncos or toppers on the back of trucks. Then you can change over to the truck gate and just have a flip up window while keeping a hard top?

Anyone ever make one or know of an aftermarket for it.

Or how about aftermarket electric windows like they put on hotrods. Change out the motor and solinoid but use the stock glass and track?
Just a shot in the dark. Then again you can tell me to shutup and go away. I will understand.

yeah, haven't gotten that far, but my intention was to do a flip up lexan one like a truckcap would have. of course it probably wont be as simple as that... biggest issue I'm guessing will be having a lip for the glass to rest against on the hardtop.. bottom you could just do the flap gasket like the pickup ones have..

very far down the list tho...

I knew it had gone through your demonic mind.

I had a 69 bronco and actually liked the rear window setup. Actually (and I know it may be sacrilege on this site) I loved that rig. But I thought about getting a close look at one and fab it to the blazer.

If you got a thick enough Flap gasket for the Sides it would work too... The top would be the issue.

My old topper on the dakota did just that, Has the Flap gasket on the sides and bottom and just rested against the topper edges. The top had a funky full piano hinge contraption though.

I know that the 1st gens have a recessed lip on the topper that allows the rear glass frame to sit flush...not sure what kind of gaskets are in there, though.

I'll have to take a look at my buddy's '72 one of these days to find out.
