Considering a Suburban Tow Rig

Biggest problem towing in mountains with a 6.5 is heat. EGT and water temp. Depending on the year you can get a better water pump. That helps.

I have done a little towing with a 6.5 not a ton. But some imho heat is the biggest issue. It causes you to back out when there is enough power to maintain speed
 
Burbans make awesome tow rigs. My folks had a 91 3/4 454 and it towed some pretty heavy loads through NJ and PA. They also had a 96 6.5 and it made a bunch of trips to FL with a loaded trailer and it did pretty good for a stock truck. While it was no speed racer while towing it got the job done nicely. Mileage while empty was good to up around 20 on the highway.

Biggest issue with diesel suburbans is finding one that hasn't been beat to hell and back.

That being said I've seen plenty of nice 3/4 burbs on ebay in the 15k range. Lots to choose from just a matter of going to where they are.

Might be just me but a suburban is suppose to have barn doors, not some lift gate shit, lol.
 
D-max burb is really cool.

6.5 unless it has the mods done is going to need them done.

Dually is cool but not needed.

8.1 would be awesome if you can find a decent one.

I just bought mine 99 with a 454 7 passenger with a sunroof. Never made from the factory that way, it is a ChooChoo custom. Paid $3500 for it no issues so for with it.

It was so cool, and I would totally consider a dually burb if one showed up that wasn't junk. The truck was surprisingly not as wide as a dually pickup. I don't think it had a van axle. It may have been do to wheel choice.

Ideally I'd want a 9 passenger burb with a tailgate.

Although, I wouldn't mind captains chairs up front if I could fit a little ARB or some such fridge in between the seats. I've also seen some real nice conversion style burbs online as well with big comfy seats.

Thats cool that folks still advertise like that by you. We've gone predominantly to craigslist. I try to keep up with Hemmings when I'm searching as well.

Of the newer style? Most of the conversion burbs & vans I have seen are from the 80s. :dunno:

Having a hard time remembering any of those (maybe I haven't met one yet?). Would enjoy seeing pictures if you have a specific one in mind. :thinking:

I've seen a lot of van conversions, but not so many Suburbans.

If I stumble across some I'll post them up. I saw a killer half ton burb in North Dakota that had a raised roof like a conversion van. and a whole bunch of 90s graphics, but I didn't take a picture.
