Considering a Suburban Tow Rig

Yep been looking at truck recently and there is no way I'm paying 15k for a truck with 300k on it.

But it's really been that way for a while.

I don't see it changing. Diesel trucks demand a premium price that's it

Considering all that I ended up with a 99 2500 burb with a big block.. All 12mpg and all.. 2500$ I don't regret it one bit..

Yeah, it has been that way for at least a couple years now, and I don't really see an end in sight since new 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are going for $60k+ off the lot...who the freak is paying those prices??? That is just nuts! And the fact that you can really only spread that cost out over a 5 or 6 year note at best (I know, cause I work for a bank), your freaking monthly payment is more than what normal house payments are going for nowadays....probably the stupidest decision ever in my book...but that's just me I guess cause I see a lot of brand new trucks rolling down the road

That's why I saw we stay with the crew cab square bodies and just upgrade them to meet our needs!! :deal:

Amen to that...I'm telling you, it's not all about mpg's no matter what you see on television. If you are buying a commuter car to back and forth from work, then yes it matters. But something you drive every once in a while to tow, or play in, or just to drive in the snow...who gives a crap if it gets 10-12 mpg's, cause you are saving every single day by not having a payment, and you can get cheaper insurance.....

I guess some of us just think about it differently

Yep, paid for makes a lot of sense to me now days.. I still have my Vw payment but that'll be the last time I have a car payment..

Here is one in Denver: http://wyoming.craigslist.org/cto/5723508868.html
Or tell your friends and dog they have to sit under the tonneau and I know of a member selling their 8.1 Avalanche in the for sale section that would throw in the tent to sleep in:whistle:.

Really though, I am quite an advocate for the 2003 - 2006 suburban/avalanche platform with the 8.1L. I think they are a good balance of power/price/reliability/comfort/capability.

The 03 Dodge 2500 holds a full size spare, 315/70/17. I know It's not a major concern to most but I like it.

I have one, and love it. That being said, in stock form, it barely gets out of its own way. Towing anything but flat sucks. My boat is only 4500lbs ish, and I was regularly down in the 20mph range on hills.

Well, we all know stock sucks.....

have you modded it?

I love my diesel. I paid 17k for it 8 years ago and today it's still worth that, which is crazy. The diesel market today is insane because of bros.

That's a nice rig and price for only 98k on the clock

curious to see what rich ends up with
I'm willing to take the fire truck to add more cash to the budget

I haven't bought a truck...

Fire Truck could very well end up for sale, but I've been driving that the most of late. I can't sell it without replacing it, because I need a truck to work on my place in Maine.

The fire truck is in hybrid mode right now. 37s on the back for optimum gear ratios and stockers up front for less teeth rattling.

I had a very Chevy weekend.

I replaced the beetle this week. The buyback on it is in October.

I have to say, the beetle is easily the best car I've ever owned. I wonder if there will ever be another 6 speed convertible diesel front wheel drive car that gets over 40mpg on the market? I'm definitely going to miss it.

Anyways, here is the replacement. It's a 98 Jetta tdi with a 5 speed and I just rolled over 84,000 miles on the odometer. I'll probably have to get the timing belt done soon for peace of mind. I still have a $500 vw gift card to spend and another $500 visa gift card that vw gave me, so I think it'll go towards that. I've owned some ghetto stuff, but this car takes the cake. I've dubbed her the Jetto Blaster.

I haven't stopped the search for a tow rig. But, this allows me to up my standards and takes a lot of pressure off the search. I know vans were mentioned before. I had forgotten the express came with a duramax. I know they get lifted and converted to 4x4 sometimes, but does anyone know if they can be converted and kept at stock height? Is this a DIY job or are Quigley and whoever else using a ton of custom parts?

The express vans with the dmax are denutted, since they only come wth the 4L80E instead of the Allison

We had some on the slope that had the same basic IFS as the pickups nt sure if they were factory or a conversion but they were only slightly taller then a stock 2wd.

I don't know what trans the newer express' have but it looks to be a 6 speed.

$45K is pricey. How much does it cost to commission a 4x4 conversion of a typical surplus Dmax van? Seems like cargo vans are dirt cheap when the fleets get done with them. :dunno:

That van would probably be around 55k new and the conversion is another 12k on top of that.

It's actually not a bad deal at all if that was what you were looking for.

I did a little more reading and it should have a 6l90 transmission. That seems to be a decent heavy duty trans from what I have read.

Quigley will only convert vans that are newish with low miles or brand new vehicles.
