Considering buying a K5

a decent 87-91 would probly go for at least 3grand. but i would shoot for 89+. a clean 73-75 will probly go for double that. and i kinda doubt you'll find something that doesnt have a big rust problem in your area.

the efi from 80's definatly isnt the best system as far as efi's go, but i wouldnt say they should be avoided.by the late 80's they got the reliablity factor pretty much worked out. GM used basically the same system until mid 90's on trucks.early 80's stuff is probly more tempermental if you wanted to hot rod a TBI truck then maybe u should avoid it, since its tuff to get much more than 300hp out of them. but for DD truck duties, i think its perfect. i sure wouldnt trade my 89 EFI for a carb.

IMO the best way to get a good clean vehicle is to buy out of state. get something in a rust free area like CA or AZ/NV. its definatly worth it in the long run to get a better candidate to start with instead of doing a ton of repair work.

Great advice, that helps me alot. Money is definately a factor, I have too many toys as it is to begin with. I may actually spring for that 86 after all. By next year it *may* be qualifiable for historic tags which will save a ton on tags and insurance. If a newer truck is going to fetch $3K or so, or if an older mid 70's will catch around the same or even more, then the $1000 for that 86 which is in good condition may be worth it. I'm not willing to travel to CA or NM or TX to get the vehicle as the plane tickets and trip and time isn't worth it to me. Maybe the 305 and carb isnt that bad, considering I can always swap the motor which will be easier with a carb then a EFI.

The truck will not be a DD by anymeans, it will be a tinkering/offroading machine, which I may actually build a motor for since I have never built a motor on anything and would like to.
