Hi all,

Anyone have any experience converting a suburban tailgate setup to a barn door setup?

Looks like the only think different is the tailpan?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated

Thanks

What year sub do you have?
Up tp 83 or 84 the tub had provision for both, after that if you didn't have barn doors, it takes more work to switch.

If you have any questions about it, don't hesitate to ask. I've done the swap the easy way and the extremely hard way.

Hmm. I just bought an 88 rust free tub (tail gate) to replace my rusty 88 tub (barn doors).

I really haven't looked at it too closely but it seems to me that a few crucial measurements and the barn door hinges should fit. I can't remember if the barn door hinges are recessed or not or if there is any gussets/reinforcement of the rear frame assembly that might be different/missing.

It seems that from the feedback it can be done I guess...

Yes it can be done one of two way.

Either hack off the back 4"-6" of each burb and grapht the barn door section onto the good body or....

cut out the hinge pockets (after LOTS of measuring) and weld them in the appropriate location. The rear floor crossmember will also need to be swapped.

I've done this both ways as described above. Either way isn't easy, just very time consuming.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm about to convert to barn doors on my 84. Any tips to this ? I can cut the rear off the donor burb.

I was told 1978 was the last year the Suburban's had a rear section that would accept either a tailgate or barn doors--after that GM decided to make the rear of the truck specific for either a tailgate or barn doors, the floor section is different..stupid move in my opinion, but thats the way it is..

I was very bummed out the barn doors I bought at a nearby junkyard to replace the rotted tail gate on my '85 Burb ,but I learned too late to put them on would require a LOT of body mods and I'd need the floor section from the donor truck (which was headed to the crusher ,I was lucky the guy hauling it with the forkloader let me get the doors & hardware..they even had a matching paint job and pin stripe,it was too good to be true.

I'm not much of a body man so I decided to not even attempt the conversion..I was lucky the junkyard gave me a refund, normally you buy it,you own it is their policy, but another customer had called looking for the doors I bought,so they bought them back for what I paid..

I hate tail gates and power windows, and my Burb has both...makes me wonder why I ever bought it to begin with..:screwy:
