I was changing out the diff fluid on my10 bolt axle and I noticed that some of the teeth on the spider gears in my G80 are in bad shape and it will explode in the near future. Axle swap is not an option, so I am looking to replace the carrier. While on ebay I came across this, a "converted gov-lock" carrier

Is this any good?

the cases are known to be weak on these . why modify them :dunno:

I would get a good open diff and add a lunch box locker . or do a Detroit . for hardcore use .

if dd and light trail use a good aftermarket posi be fine .

and no clutches to wear out . :thumb:

few guys here run one . search my screen name and true trac under advanced search . I got one for my unfinished 2wd build and few guys chimmed in on them . :D

I might as we'll regear the axles while they'll have the rear tore apart. Now, to figure out how much that'll run me.

That kind of looks like regular gov-lock frictions in there. Those aren't really designed for clutch limited-slip type use. I would want to hear some real-world experience on the durability before putting one in. $300 sounds like a good price, but I would rather just run a gov-lock and used ones can be found for much less.

don't regear just yet . look for a pair of axles for sale with gears you want from someone that swapped in bigger axles and now selling there 1/2 ton stuff.

lots of times 1/2 price or less this can be done over the cost of regearing your stuff.

^This. Chevy axles are plentiful and cheap. You're looking at several hundred in parts alone per axle once you get the ring and pinion, install kit, seals and bearings, etc. And that's assuming you have the tools to set everything up. Paying a shop to do it can easily run 1500-2000 for parts and labor on two axles.

Not a bad idea, I'll see if I can score some re-geared axles. I'm confident that I can swap in the locker myself. I just need to get a dial indicator and a press. Because the gov locker is on some serious borrowed time, the chipped ring side spider gear is going to chew up the other spider gears.

should i worry about the condition of spider gears and pitted ring gear?

Here is a picture of the G80 locker. Should i be worried about the condition of the spider gears? And should i be worried about the pitting on the ring gear?

The ring gear isn't too bad but I would avoid that carrier. I used to be OK with the G80 till I split one like a melon just going around a corner on a city street, never realized just how weak the case is on these.

The g80 will be replaced, but I'm concerned if the carrier will break and render the rear axle inoperable in the mean time .

Just get a new carrier:dunno:

I've got a 30 spline ten bolt carrier i could sell if you really need one. Or a 28 spline one.

i'm going to go look at a D44/12 Bolt axle combo this weekend. They are geared to 4.10 and have open diffs. I may take you up on that offer if they don't pan out. I'll need the 28 spline one. So im assuming the pitting on the ring gear is not that big of a deal?

P.S. i've looked into going the 14 bolt route, its just not in the cards for me at the moment.

Wish you were closer. I have a 10bolt/12bolt combo in my backyard that I want gone (although I haven't really tried to get rid of them). The 12 bolt is 4.10/Truetrac. I would let it go for a song.

Loved mine too. Went to CUCV axles, though. I'm waiting to get it back from paint, but I think the detroit locker is going to make me miss my truetrac...on the street at least.

I'm torn between a truetrac, for its streetability, and a lock rite for its ease of install and it's lockability

I don't reading 1 bad thing on true trac units .

but lockrights ( aka lunch box lockers ) in the 10/12 bolt can be some problems depending on use.

buy the time you setup gears for carrier swap and buy the lockright just do the true trac I say .

only lockright I have read super reviews on was for dana 60's . guys have great luck with them in there . :dunno:

not saying there bad . just the stuff I recall said about them is all.

I got a true trac for my 2wd build. great price saved $90.00 still in box new off ebay . and lots of guys love them . so I figured less maintance and good service life why not.

To add...

I'm not going to say a truetrac is as good as a locker offroad, but you can intentionally actuate it by dragging the brakes a little if you ever need it. And it's maintenance free, no clutches, no fluid additive. If you're considering it for a truck that is mainly road-driven (like mine), its street manners will more than make up for whatever shortcomings it may have from a full locker. You get the point, if this was Amazon, it'd get 5 stars from me.
