I've been told its as simple as, pull the clutch packs and internals and replace the output shaft. Is that correct? I know there is a lot of crap in there but I'm about to practice by pulling apart the junk 4x4 trans I have. Is there anything else I need to know? Is the output shaft the only part I need from the 4x4 trans?

that is about all you have to do. The output shaft is held in with two snap rings. You will also have to take off the valve body so you can get to the servo for the 2nd band. The output shaft is the only part that is needed from a 4x4 trans
