I am going to replace the side tank with a Suburban 31 gallon tank where the spare was. The truck has a custom made flat bed so fitting it in and moving it high is not a problem. I have the 6.2 Diesel and it is an 1986 M1008.

I am going to order:

Sending Unit for 6.2 Diesel: http://www.mtscompany.com/images/sendingunits/GMSU-31J3.JPG

Do I need this? Or is this just for EFI Gasoline?

Fuel Pump: http://www.mtscompany.com/images/pumps/efpk-3209.jpg

Here are my questions:

1: Do I need that fuel pump or does the 6.2 Diesel engine have a pump on it? Can I lengthen the lines and still have adequate pressure?

2: Does a diesel have a froward and return line line a gasoline engine? Looks like it does.

3: Does this look like I have everything I need to disconnect the side tank and plumb in this rear tank. I can fabricate mounts, that is not a problem.

4: My truck, 1986 M1008 has what appears to be an extremely large filler hole. I sort of want to get ride of this military specific thing and replace it with a standard Chevy part. Is the filler hole that mounts to the bed side the same for unleaded and diesel or are they different sizes?

Thanks this is my first Diesel.

Not real sure of the answers to your questions but it is exactly what i was thinking of asking and what i want to do to my k20 so i am subscribed and waiting.

1. Yes a mechanical lift pump on the front passenger side down low. Not sure on the extra length of hose but I think you'll be fine on pressure. You could always ad an electric fuel pump to help push the fuel.

2. Yes it does.

3. Yep you could really get a Blazer tank also and I don't think it matters gas or diesel, just get the correct diesel sending unit for the tank.

4. The filler is huge for the m1008 and yes they are different from a gas filler to a civi diesel filler which is what you want.

I would check your local pick n pull for these parts to, probably be cheaper.

The nice thing about the larger filler neck would be the ability to fill up quickly at a truck stop... those big truck pumps would take about 20 seconds to fill a 31 gallon tank.

Yep. Precisely why the military wanted them on the CUCV's.

Pull up to the back of a HEMMT fueler, stick the hose in the filler neck, blast away for less than a minute, pull the hose out, off you go full of Jet B or whatever it is the military runs today.

the extra black hose that looks like its zip tied to the suckision line goes on to the return port in side the tank to prevent foaming.

Your mechanical pump will have no more trouble drawing fuel from the new suburban tank than the original saddle tanks.

Make sure you use a diesel filler neck from a civilian truck, most diesel pumps have larger nozzles than gasoline pumps. There is was one place in town that I can fill my K5 up at with a gasoline filler neck on it (used to be a gas truck), and they just changed their pumps out so I have to fill it with jerry cans now.

Russell, knock out the center piece (without dropping it down the tank if possible) and the diesel pumps will work. No need to change the filler hose.
