Convince me to keep the K5 please!

Nope, definietly have not made my mind up on this one! I guess more than anything I am just getting tired of always bring the odd man out, there is next to no one running fullsize anything offroad anymore. I suppose I'll just sit on it for a while longer and use it for the last two trail runs of the year before deciding.

And Trust me, I enjoy driving the K5 more than a jeep, but the smaller size and link suspensions on the Jeeps ares undeniably better than my cobbled leaf suspension and big wide body

I can help!

I work on jeeps...trust me You're NOT MISSING a thing!
Get ready to be totally frustrated! There are so many combo's and variations..many parts store runs..they're not cut and dry like chevys.

The only jeeps that can follow my truggy have chevy motors and drivetrains!:wink1:

I was once in your shoes with this delema. Then, I took a ride in a jeep, I thought it was gonna beat me to death! What a horrible riding thing.
Plus, you'll lose a lot of room inside that you may be use to.
Yea, jeeps are cute and all but if you've done as much modifying to your rig as I have, it seems silly to start over with one of those.
So ya should know by now where my vote is.

My favorat part about driving my jimmy is its big/ugly and people swerv out of my way.LOL Plus I have 5 in the famaly and we all fit without screming from the back.I only drive it for the most part when I need to pull my trl so mileage isnt much of a concern because I only go to the next town to pick up fire wood.

I think I have a fairly unbiased/unemotional approach to automobiles. I do get attached to them, but I have no problem letting them go. My theory is "you gotta do what you gotta do". When people (most people, myself included) reminisce about autos they've owned, they tend to not think about the whole picture. For example, I used to have this sweet F250. When I think about how I enjoyed owning it, I don't really recall all the times it left me stranded. So, will you regret it 10 years from now, maybe, but maybe not. Maybe you'll have a nicer rig. It's not like you won't be able to find another K5 down the road. You got to do what you got to do. Good luck with the decision.

Dont get me wrong , Jeeps are cute- barbie drove one ya know. BUt seriously anyone can drive a jeep down any old trail. The true test of a man is , Can he do it in a Fullsize? I work on jeeps regularly enough these days that i wouldnt consider one now. Way too many upgrades necessary to do anything especially cool with .The 4.0 is a reliable motor, besides that the rest of the rig is not .

JEEP=Just-empty-every-pocket

I'm selling all my 4wheel stuff. Getting into a hobby that i can actually enjoy on a daily basis.

ive ridden in a lifted jeep that was done right and it is still scary off camber.it had 6 inch lift and 35 inch tires, same as mine and was not even half as stable offroad.i like my cherokee as a daily driver but im not sure i would like it lift more than a couple inches with 33s.stick it out with the blazer you have already built.put links if you want.make it work the way you want.jeeps can be fun too and if you are dead set on changing rigs the rubicon is a awesome platform to start with and will not have any rust issues and will fit in with your friends rigs.im sure someone will appreciate the hard work you have done to the blazer and have fun wheeling it if you sell it.

Have you ever driven a jeep on ice or gravel at speed? If you haven`t let me tell you your not gona like it! JMO

I worked at a ford/jeep dealer for a year once and probably had the ****iest 78 chevy pickup on the planet, no floor in the cab or box. if it rained I got wet. the rocker fell out, I jumped it one time and the bumper broke the taillight! to me it seemed even at that point like a far better driving, more well built vehicle than one of those wranglers.

After working there I will never own a jeep that wasnt made by AMC, nor will I ever recomend one to someone.

You will regret it...I get sooo many people that come up to me and want to buy my K5 and always tell me that they wish they would've kept their K5.

i work on jeeps. not like often, or somewhat consistantly, but every friggin day. i own jeeps. i had 5 up until last january. down to 2.
i have a k5. gutless, 1 ton swap, and way too big for the trails in oregon.
i have a 06 rubicon. also gutless. but fits down the trails.
like you, i was going to sell my k5, but to buy a tow rig for the jeep.
that rubicon makes my k5 look stupid on the trails around here. the first time out, i didnt want to take it because it "only" had 33" tires. but guess what. it didnt need bigger. it took names.
but. it barely gets 14mph highway. gets 11 in town. sways like hell in the wind, and has no power. i got spanked from 45-65mph by a semi truck with a trailer.
the great 4.0l engine thats everybody loves is a joke.
195hp? seriously. my tj weighs 4500lbs. wtf?
low end torque? where? how about it starts making power at 2200rpm, thats not low end.
leaks oil - rear main is 2 piece, oil pan, valve cover, everywhere.
wanna put lifters in it? well then remove the cylinder head.
fuel mileage? my almost stock dd xj gets 12mpg. in town. all the time.
not putting oil additive in? well then you will need a new camshaft.

atleast a rubicon has d44's under it right? sure, just dont throttle it with the wheels turned. dont jump it either. those dana 30 tubes pressed into that 44 center section wont like that. so ok it just needs a few upgrades to make it trail worthy, like alloy axles and full trusses and......

its going to be the same as youre k5. needing upgrades to make it do what you want it to do, without breaking.

other things-
you dont need links under the k5 to keep up. there are plenty of people on here that have proven that.
it's nice to be the odd one out and not a bellybutton.
i remember when k5's where the bellybutton truck.
i'm not trying to steer you away from the jeep. i'm just saying that it will end up the same as the k5. needing more mods, or stuff, or whatever.

BTW. I STILL HAVE THAT K5.
i'm modding it to fit down those tight oregon trails. it just isnt the same.

pic whore on

It doesn't matter if it's a Jeep, Toyota, Bronco I/II, Sami...

If you don't have the passion for the rig, you don't have it...

On another note, If you own any of the above stated rigs, try and follow me...

Not saying my Blazer is the end all be all but, you better pack a lunch...

There's a reason every other rig out there wants to upgrade to Chevy stuff... Not because it's cool(which it is), but because it works...

How many people want a Jeep or Toyota axle under their Chevy???:haha: And Ford, come awn...:haha:

Just stick to the rivers and lakes that you're used to...

6.2L turbo diesel engine
NV3500 5 speed stick / NP241
1 ton axles
Winch
OBA (York Compressor setup)
Very good condition for our area

That is an awesome setup. I'd love to be at that point with my blazer. So far mine is a stock blazer with a tbi350 and fresh black paint... I've still got a long way to go until I get it the way I want it, but its worth it. I'm trying to prioritize what its going to take to get it daily-driveable and then plan the long term creature comforts later. When its done, i'll be driving something that I like, that is dependable, different from what everyone else drives, and is easy to work on. What more could you want? Plus, its badass. Who else do you know in your area driving in a big tough chevy with the top off?

Ah, who am I kidding...

Keeping the K5, going with a radius arm front suspension with a dodge style coil over shock setup, and some new spring bushings out back on the 52s. Gonna go buy some proper offset wheels and wider / bigger tires this weekend to make her more stable, and re-gear to 5.13s to match.

Funny! They never say anything to me when I drive it. Then again I'm not blond with boobs either. :haha:

Honey, if you were blond with boobs, I definitely look the other way...nobody will still go up to you.

I can't believe no one has come up to you...I had guys follow me in parking lots just to talk about my K5 (and it wasn't cause of my blondness and boobs either)
