Never knew an electromagnetic drill press existed until I saw Billy Bob Thorton cracking a safe with one in Bad Santa. Thought it was pretty cool ****. Been with my employer four and half years, at my current location a year and a half and we have one here. Been itching to use it ever since I got here! Got to use it twice in the last week! First time using it I had to drill four holes, it worked good but not great because the surface I magnetized it to wasn't the best. Used it yesterday and it was amazing! Thick surface to mount it to so it was solid as a rock. Drilled a one inch hole, three inches deep into steel in under two minutes. ****ty cheap bit, too. I'd still be there if I had to use a hand drill. The thing weighs like sixty pounds. Standing there working the guy i was working with says "This thing is gonna break our feet if the power goes out." Then I looked over at the wall and said "If someone decides they need to charge their phone and unplugs my cord we're ****ed!"

No one got hurt, and we got the job done. I love using weird tools like this, and it made what would have been a huge sh!t show a pretty simple job.

mag base drills can certainly be a life saver.

25 years ago? I was seven. I was flicking boogers and watching Camp Candy.

I was squirtin eleventy thousand gallons of Imron on D9's and mixers...

and flickin boogers...

we always had VERY current equipment... the company had over 300 trucks, mixer's, etc....

we had plasma's when they first came out... mig's.... that place was nut's.. I once stickwelded 3 BIG outboard test tanks, made of 1/2" plate.... :eek1:

I'll have to scan some pics of that stuff some day...

You laugh about the cord being unplugged but it happens. We have a big mag base we use for small drilling jobs that don't require the full line bore setup and one time a guy tripped over the cord while the boss was drilling something. Fell from about 4 foot up and almost busted his toes. :(

We don't have the newest equipment, but he have some decent stuff they'll drop HUGE money on useless **** that doesn't work, is down more than its running, or isn't needed but cheap out on other stuff. The first time I used it it was hanging from a crane, but that wasn't really an option for what I had to do here.
