Coolant bottle/ reservoir tank/ overflow

I haven't checked the dealership yet but I was doing some old thread reading about guys still being able to pick them up. Dates back to 2007 though Well, if I remember right, I'm on my second bottle. Threw the one away that came with the truck and put another one on (I think) and now this one is bad. It has cracked at the top front corner, all the tabs are good though I want something better and honestly thinking about mounting it next to the radiator. Something aluminum or SS or Poly.

Anybody have any luck with a certain brand or style, or experience you could share? Something simple is all I need.

My 82 K2500 had no coolant overflow bottle when I got it,all there was left of it was a pile of shattered white plastic nuggets down in the inner fender well......it's had a Prestone jug zip-tied in its place since the day I got it,I just bored a hole in the cap to shove the overflow hose into it...worked fine for 10 years now!...

As demonstrated just about anything works as long as the "pickup tube" goes to the bottom of the reservoir.

Haha I saw that eBay ad this morning and had a chuckle. Does it mater where it's mounted? Meaning, the level of the hose vs the level of the radiator?

No. Coolant is pushed out from expansion as the coolant heats up, and is pulled back in as the coolant decreases in volume as it cools. As long as the tube is submerged in the reservoir (and the reservoir is large enough) it will work fine.

Had to think about it awhile, but the early(?) reservoirs were mounted below the level of the radiator overflow fitting, and the later ones are pretty close to the same level as the overflow fitting.

just need something the right size and vented
the hose will end up being say below the radiator cap if I'm mounting this right next to it. I'm currently trying to clean up the engine compartment and remove stuff from the wheel wells.
the EBay bottle isn't vented but that's not hard to fix
800ml is a little bigger than a Vodka bottle (yes, that's how I compare metric volumes) and would probably be big enough. I just need to have at least some coolant in the bottom when it's cold and have enough room for expansion. I don't think it rises that much in my bottle now, so I might give this one a try.

i did the exact same thing on a 1967 f-250 with a 390 in it and it worked great!!

Actually many vehicles get by fine without an overflow bottle,they did not even start using them until the mid 70's on most vehicles...one of my vehicles had a coolant tank crack and I just ran the overflow hose down towards the ground,and the radiator lost about a quart of coolant,and then remained at a level about 2" down from the filler cap---it never overheated or had any coolant peuke out of the overflow hose the whole time I drove the car,and I eventually came across a replacement bottle and installed it..newer vehicles with smaller radiators that run hotter probably will need one though...

Then the Feds stepped in. If you are on federal land, forest service/BLM, your vehicle must have a recovery tank. I had a friend who got stopped for a vehicle inspection in the 90's. They were checking every vehicle going into Yosemite. Turned him away in his 70's corvette. No recovery bottle. It was stupid.

Well, they have them rules to prevent damage to the environment, or animals. At one time, crank case gasses were vented down by the bell housing and thats why when you look at old pictures of highways the center of each lane was black as oil vapors were vented directly out. Thus the PVC valve was invented. Drag strips also have a overflow rule as antifreeze brings the suck to clean up.

You can run without one, and be totally fine. Problem is when you overheat which all trucks like ours do when we are out and about on various excursions, you will not have enough coolant after it cools back down.

Is one quart going to be big enough? I'm looking at that Jaz container, thinking how I'm going to mount 4" diameter to the core support. I wonder what my left over PSC reservoir mount diameter is.
