once in a while i catch a whiff of coolant coming from the vents in my suburban. does this mean i'll soon get to experience the joy of heater core replacement? i can't think of anywhere else it would be coming from.

Yep, you get to swap heater cores. I did my 89 Blazer years ago and it wasn't really a big deal. I had the job done in just over an hour. There is a bolt under the housing under the hood which was the most difficult part and I was able to get it with a 1/4" drive with a long extension and I believe a swivel socket.

ok, shouldnt be a big deal then. i need to flush my coolant out anyway.

non rust belt guys remove inner fender pass side and tons of room to work in there .

the long threaded studs lube them / clean them and go slow .

Rust belt guys like me already have a large access (aka "rot") hole in the inner fender, right where that bolt is......

Two square body trucks I did heater cores in, didn't get that "hard to get at" bolt replaced by the last guy who replaced the heater core too evidently..
I didn't put one back either..

This guy DID NOT remove an inner fender to remove nasty to get at bolt.

make sure the hoses arent just leaking where they connect to the core, coolant runs down the tubes, and you end up smelling coolant in the cab.

I looked up pictures and drilled a hole in the inner fender when I did mine. Was pretty painless with a 1/4in swivel on an impact driver.

Replace it sooner rather than later if you think it's going to go. Once it starts really leaking it makes a holy mess. If you have carpet it gets in the jute backing and you get to live with that smell for quite awhile. Mine went completely out before I realized what was going on and coolant was even in the defroster vents. Got a nice sticky sheen all on the inside of my windshield not to mention in the vents.

Yuck. I'll buy one this weekend.
