Hey guys i'm new to k5 i just bought an 87 k5 jimmy 350/sm465. i learned to drive on that tranny and i love it, but i've been challenged to a tug against a 3/4 ton 350/th350. its still got 3.08:1's on the 10 bolt and i want to go to a 14. do i need new drive-shafts? its a np205 case. thanks!

if the 14bff is out of a 3/4 ton then u r fine besides getting a conversion u joint to go from ur 1/2 ton driveshaft to the 1 ton yoke on the axle. but if the 14bff is out of a 1 ton then you have to move in the spring perches, just get under your truck and measure from spring to spring. then measure between spring perches on the 14bff. if they r the same width then get some U bolts and a conversion u joint for your driveshaft. o ya the napa part number is 447 for the conversion u joint.

o ya, dont forget if you dont already know you have to have the same gears in the 14b as ur front axle, its really hard to find a 14bff with 3.08s...im not sure if they even came with them. an easy fix is just find a pair of axles out of a truck with the 14bff. if your really lucky, ull find a k30 and have a D60 in the front (guys look for them for years) but if you arent going to big with tires then axles from a 3/4 are fine.

thanks a bunch. yeah i was planning on just grabbing a pair of 3/4 ton axles, and i was pretty sure i had enough travel in those drive-shafts not to worry about it. i'm still fooling myself thinkin i'm not gonna go overboard with this truck. i wasn't gonna run any bigger than 35's or 37's so i think 3.73's will do fine, especially with that sm465

haha ya, we all do that, my brother had 4" on 33s a while back and we thought it was the SH!T, but now im working on 9" susp. and 11" with body lift. but ya with the 465 gears arent as important compared to running an auto tranny. but anything bigger then 37s u would want to gear it.
