What is wrong with welding them? When you weld them you don't have to screw the carrier. The way I do it is I tack the gear's when the carrier is split in half. Then I put the two piece's together , and make sure it fit's. Then I tack the other side and do again. I just make sure they fit flush with no bolt's. Then I burn them into a ball of steel. That way I have a spool , and not a f'd carrier. So If I ever got a detroit or lockright or something all I have to do is remove that chunk of metal.

Yes, I run a spool in my 14BFF. I did not have to know how and access to a welder at the time I installed it. Pros for me is it's something I don't have to worry about. I know it's locked all the time and it was cheaper than a detroit. Cons are that it wears the crap out of tires on the road. When you turn it drags the inside tire and makes lots of cool noises. If I had to do it over again now, I would weld it like Philip describes above. You can search and find some info on welding them as well. -Eric

Yeah I have had welded up the axle's in my last 3 truck's. The one I am working on now is getting it too. IMHO there is no reason to spend more than $19 to lock a 14 bolt. And that is Mig Wire , and a Diff cover gasket. I know it is locked just like the other guy's , and 14 bolt's are strong , and don't mind the abuse. My friend's think I am nut's but I am used to welded axle's and they don't bother me. I also like the fact I know what they will do as they arn't going to surprise you . Good luck .
you can take the carrier to a welder. but by then your time, effort, and money paid will probably equal a spool.
