I recently bought a 1988 K5 & alternator doesn’t seem to be charging battery properly. Even after it’s been running awhile, after I shut it off & try to restart it’s real slow on restarting ?? Any ideas ??

Well I found 2 dead cells in a supposedly new Napa battery & the water level was almost at top of grids. EVERYTHING this guy I bought truck from has been a lie. So I’m just gonna buy New battery, alternator & starter. And deal with other wiring issues then.

I wouldn't waste a dime on an alternator unless i knew it was bad. And if I was spending money on a starter, I'd get a gear reduction one.

That can be maintenence in some cases though. If it's an unknown, then increase the chances of it not failing.
And I always go for a gear reduction starter anymore.

Or with all the crappy Chinese repops, "new" could be worse quality than what's in there that you know works lol.

I don't have a ton of rigs, but I don't think I've ever had an alternator fail. Water pump, belts, batteries, pickup coil, injectors, gaskets, radiators, hoses, sure.

Yup, that's why I didn't say that it eliminates a possible failure.

If you run one long enough, the brushes will wear out, no chargy... or really weak.
Bearings seem to go before other things quite often.

But I am lucky and get excellent rebuild work from Western Alternator in Montrose, CO. He tries to get the most reliable parts to build with, but even he has seen a decline in reliability of what he can get.
