Cost for Disc Brake Conversion???

So a little planning for the rear. I am thinking about doing a disc brake conversion on the 14 FF. I am just now pricing the total cost and came across this:

Is that about right? A good deal or over priced?

Again I just started looking and have found the bracket sets from different makers, price all about the same.

If I could find it in a junk yard what should I look for? Is it any old 1/2 ton chevy?
 
Got to be 3/4 ton stuff, 1/2 ton is 6-lug

I guess if you didnt have any rotors or caliper cores it would be alright.

My calipers cost $12 each but core price was like $40, so the total would have been $52 each if I didnt have the cores.

Rotors were like $40 a piece but I had a good set already

Pads were $12

Then brackets are about $70

Looks like $270 for all this if you dont have caliper cores or rotors. Ive got $100 in mine since I had those things.

The kit is $265 plus $50 for shipping so $315. Not too far off from buying it in a parts store since you'll still have to pick up the hardware which was less than $10 I think and shipping on the caliper brackets.
 
That it a decent price. I did a rear disk brake conversion on my 14 SF. I bought the kit from TSM Manufacturing, it was about $800 by the time I got everything that I needed. Just make sure that if you want an e-brake that you get the calipers with an e-brake, otherwise, no e-brake unless you get a drive-line e-brake. I would be wary about the no refunds policy, "as-is". Another thing to consider is that the rotor looks like it mounts BEHIND the hub. Could be a pain to change later?
 
All of the older 14bff, not sure on years, have the rotor/drum mounted behind the hub so you have to remove the hub and press out the studs everytime you change it.

And I forgot about the e-brake, that is something else you may want to consider. I dont have any kind of e-brake on either of my rigs.

Ord put a hyraulic e-brake on their ultimate adventure rig last year and if I remember correctly they were going to start selling the kit they used which used an valve inside the cab, kind of like a manual line lock.
 
Rear disc conversion cost about 540.03 which includes el dorado Cadillac rear calipers which have a mechanical e brake you can attach your current brake cable to. Rotors, Brake lines etc. The calipers with e brake are $$. If you use standard 3/4 calipers it runs about 378.83.

I just finished pricing everything for my K5...This is using all new parts. You can save a lot if you get rotors, and calipers form a wrecking yard that are in good condition. The brackets for the conversion are about 65.00.

Oh the line locks are a great way to go, there are a lot of options but they can be pricey and if your lines fail so does your e brake.
 
Did mine for $165(ORD brackets), and another $110 or so for the rotors. Had a set of pads/calipers/brake lines of a parts suburban I had. So $275ish wash my final cost.
 
don't forget that a lot of people have trouble getting the brakes dialed in and by that I mean the rear locks up waaayyy before the front. So if you experience this then you need to get an adjustable proportioning valve which is more $$. And some people also get a soft pedal because their 1/2ton master cylinder doesn't move enough fluid so you have to upgrade to a 3/4 or 1 ton master cylinder.

I'd budget at least $500...
 
I bought a kit like that from EBay but it also came with nice brake lines to connect the calipers to the axle mounted hardlines.

Then I bought a 4 wheel disc brake master cylinder for that extra capacity and strength.

Lastly, I picked up that adjustable prop valve Chevy305 is talking about. You really should dial back the rears.

What's not "necessary" is the electric line lock I bought to replace my E-brake. It's not as reliable, since it's an electric valve vs. manual brake, but it's not a DD truck. I will be locking my front brakes, so I get extra strength in 2wd while parked/boat ramps/etc/
