Cost to build tow Rig..

Yeah for what? The 99 Suburban? I don't think I would pay much. Again, I'm a diesel guy so I'm very biased, but there are pretty cheap OBS PSD Fords and even 6.5TD GM's out there...cheap.

When cost was mentioned as a determining factor for a tow rig, I figured it would eventually come down to a 454 because they are just more practical to deal with.

Thinking about selling my F350 and buying a 8.1 or 6.0 rig

Is that the 7.3 or is it 6.9? What makes you want to sell?

My dad has a 05ish 6.0l 2500hd. Does well with towing...could use a bigger trans cooler. Gets awful mileage. Maybe 11 down hill?

A friend of mine has an 8.1 avalanche deal. Pretty much the same as above. Hideous mileage but tows ok.

There both pretty reliable and at the same time they both confirm my decision to look for an 07.5 or newer dodge diesel.

I forgot to add these gm trucks are insanely cheap now. I know my dad got his for around 10k with 65k on the clock about 5 years ago.

Really? Might make good money hauling those cheap trucks East. :thinking:

@The Griff

Indeed. Better to haul old stuff back there though. A mid 80s running blazer that's straight, rust free of course...is about a thousand bucks. Maybe a bit more. 3 grand max if it's pretty well sorted and could be daily driven reliable. Those trucks, from what I gather are 4 to 5 grand for folks back where you are and beyond.

One day I'll gather some of our spares up and hauled them back. I could see some states and probably make 10 or 15 grand minus costs.

I've thought before about heading up into the Pacific Northwest and loading up a flatbed and bringing them back this way.

I know hauling old iron is a win-win for everyone, but I was thinking you might turn a larger profit per unit with the newer stuff. Here's what those trucks run around here.

Your 65k mile truck is about 150,000 miles short of what we can get for 10 grand. I'm not sure what that's worth, I don't think I've ever seen a low-mile diesel truck for sale. :dunno:
