I have an 1989 GMC Jimmy. Full black exterior, with red interior. Time has come to get the old machine restored. She has a few small surface rust spots and a straight clean body.

If I strip her down of all exterior items and ready it for the paint people to basically strip her down as she has been painted twice that I know of.

How much to do a full repaint and body and panel restoration to factory new paint. It is my daily driver, and not a show truck. But I would like a nice new vehicle to drive for another 10 or 15 years before I worry about paint again.

How much should a paint shop subtract for not having to remove the exterior bumpers, trip, topper, windows, lights or interior. Basically getting a gutted truck with milk crate seat and steering wheel to drive it around with.

I just don't have the ability with my disability to any kind of body work or anything anymore. Haven't had a vehicle painted in like 13 years so I have know idea what to expect or demand during the full paint resto job.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Not sure what they'll knock off for a stripped vehicle. But assuming that they can paint over the existing job, that the panels are all straight and prep is minimal you are going to pay 1000-3000 for a good paint job depending on the quality of the job and paint.

I got a quote here locally for a two tone job on my Blazer for 2000 for a really good paint job(not show but one that I would be proud of) for mine with the interior stripped but floating and painting the top with it.

Beware though your mileage may vary depending on the shop.

Just do your homework and call around.

Yeah, I want a full strip down of the paint on there. Paint on there now is peeling, and the front clip repaint from a accident repair several years ago is crap now. So I'd like to start fresh with a good clean paint job.

I stopped by one place in town and he quoted $4500-5000 for a full strip down and complete body re-align assuming no big surprises lay underneath.

Ouch, 5000 is a lot. I would definately get some more quotes. I even asked around here and average was 3000-3500 for the same kind of situation.

Yeah, that is what I was kinda thinking that maybe 2000 for your basic repaint of existing paint job. Maybe 3000 - 3500 for a strip down. Of course I haven't seen one of his finished projects in person yet. He does allot of custom vehicles and bikes an he has been around for a good while and the shop is clean an organized.

I'd love to do a full restore of the truck. I just haven't seen anyone do one on our trucks. My truck just turned classic truck. I don't ever plan to get rid of it. It is my favorite vehicle and has been since they day I got it 12 years ago.

Hopefully we have some body shop people here in the forums that can chime in to help me figure this out also.

Thats a hard one to say... its like asking... what does it cost to rebuild my engine?

Just matters how far you want to go. Just that the more you spend... the more you need to really research the body shop.
