Starting to look into having a roll cage built but I’ve never gone down this path. I’m not a good enough fabricator or welder to build something like this so I’m sourcing it out. What are things I should ask? What are things that are needed? I know I want bars to strap harnesses to for the front and back seats and I know I want it plated to the floor and going to the frame so I can remove it to remove the body later in life. What’s the average cost to have a cage built?

First, even if you’re not a builder you need to be educated about cage design so you can recognize poor designs and clearly know what you want. I would search this forum, there are threads asking about design that have lots of good info.

I searched google images forever for blazer cage pics to find designs and options I liked. I found a Blazer with a cage I love and emailed the pic to a pro shop in state for a ballpark estimate, he quoted me $4000. I decided to go with a Diy4x kit and worked a deal with a friend to weld it up.

Do you know anyone that is a legit welder and/or fabricator? Diy4x.com offers a kit that’s nice and not crazy expensive, just add a good welder.

A kit with a hired certified welder is going to be the least expensive. Any shop that isn't charging $100 /hr probably shouldn't be trusted for safety equipment. Check the price on DOM tubing, adds up fast, its like $10 a foot. Add up quality labor and pricey material and $4000 comes along real quick.

That's why I'm here. Start researching and looking and learning. This is a next year project for sure. Dang suspension and leaks and steering blew my wad for this year haha.

As everyone else said. A shop will cost you 2-4 gs. A prefabbed kit and a decent welding buddy will be half. Last few I looked at just for a main hoop and two legs basic rollbar was 2- $400 I believe. Full 6 point kit around 6-$1200. Any more gussets and all that you add just keep racking up the bucks. And most of those kits didn’t bolt to frame, just the body. That will also add a lot to cost. I found a used one on Craigslist for $200 and modified it to fit my blazer. It originally was in the back of a dodge pickup and held a toolbox.
