Couple basic 205 questions :)

Thats what I meant by pulling and swapping...find a good 2wd or later 4wd case, and swap the output. But then you have to wonder if the 10 spline pieces you end up re-using are good or not...

I had a friend at a tranny shop pull the one bearing off of a shaft I couldn't get, it was well worth the $5 I gave him, took him all of 2 minutes with the bearing puller he had.

I've got a great 2wd SM465. As far as I am aware, they are identical less the output shaft, which is 35 spline for the 2wd, and 10 spline for my 4x4.

I suppose I'll call the guy I know who has done a few trannies for extended family members, and see how much it'd cost to get that reverse gear replace with the 2wd version. I don't see the need to replace the rest of the transmission, just replace those two roll pins with a sleeve, replace the bearings that get taken off, and put it back together. I don't plan on keeping this tranny in the truck for too terribly long, as I plan to upgrade to an NV4500, so I don't need it to be perfect.

The owners manual even states that you can shift into 4lo on the fly, but that you have to expect your RPM's to double.

Never attempt to shift from high range to low range while moving...:eek1: :nuke

I'd be very interested to see a scan of that page of the owners manual.

Luckily I drove the truck to work today so I have the manual, however the scanner here at work is down temporarily :doah: , so a brief description of the page will have to do for now.

Shifting transfer case with vehicle moving from any position into all wheel drive (4L):
1.Made at a speed of 5 m.p.h. or less
2.Follow instructions below

(below)
*Vehicle Moving
The transfer case can be shifted without depressing the clutch and with the understanding that the transfer case ratio is approximately 2:1 you should be able to do this with ease. A ratio of 2:1 means that your engine speed must be doubled if shifting from either 2H or 4H to 4L as the shift lever is moved through Neutral. If shifting from 4L to 2H or 4H the engine must be allowed to coast (as the shift lever is moved through Neutral) to half its original speed. Never shift to 4L at a speed above 5 m.p.h.

That was taken directly from the 1973 Owners and Drivers Manual. I don't believe that 5 mph is exactly "on the fly" so i will partially recend my statement, however this still shows that the manual states it is allowable to shift from high range into low range while moving.

EDIT: Here's the scanned page concerning shifting of the transfer case.

It does say this. I have the manual for both my '76 and '79. Both say you can shift from "any gear to 4LO" at "any speed". Yeah right! It mentions that you should understand that you need to double revs, so I think it's saying that the NP205 will handle it, but you would have to clutch into Neutral (manual mentions that) and then rev to shift into low. Bizzare.
