I have a older Dana 60 out of an old IH pickup. I like it because it is really narrow. Right now it has 4:10 gears in it and was wondering if I can go to 4:56 gears in that housing or not?

Guess Im all screwed up because I was reading that 4:11 down would not work in a 4:56 up gear housings... so the issue isnt the diff housing it is the carrier and ring gear width?

The second question is... are the carriers the same for a full floater and a semi floater axles?

Correct. It's the carrier that's the issue, not the housing.

The carrier is the same for full or semi float, however you need to pay attention to axleshaft spline count.

Semi float Dana 60s are rare. Is the one you have ff? Or sf?. I don't remember a semi float IH axle but it's possible they made one.

Witch bolt pattern is that axle? IH used an odd ball 5 lug bolt pattern on the early stuff that could pose a problem. The newer stuff uses the regular 8 on 6.5

If you need something narrow, 72 and older ford stuff works well.

Sorry I didn't really give you all the info. here... I really appreciate your help as im sure it just saved me many hours digging around on the net.

I have a complete later IH d60 with the 8 lug hubs. It has 4:10's installed at the present time. My son just removed a carrier, ring, and pinion out of his Jeep that is a semi floater 4:56 and I think its a 32 spline? But anyway I wanted to swap out the 4:10 with the 4:56. So being I have the carrier it should go in? My only concern will be the spline count on the axles matching the carrier correct? Thanks :dunno:

As long as both carriers are open, the side gears should be interchangeable.

I think that jeep axle is 35 spline. It shouldn't matter though.
