ok.. i have a few different questions. one of my cousins have a couple good parts trucks they they are parting out. i was looking at them and found alot of stuff that i liked. i just wanted you guys opinions on this stuff. first off, there is an 86 c20 with a 14 bolt rear end. how good are they and what is it worth? second, they have two older blazers, each have dana 44 "spicers" front axles on them. how good and what are they worth? lastly, both blazers also have 4 speeds (3 speed with granny gear) in them. couple q's about this. can i use my 87 k5 transfer case with that tranny or do i need the transfer case with that tranny? wich one is better anyway? how good are those trannys and what are they worth? any opinion, good or bad, is appreciated :D

To start off there are 2 different 14 bolt axles. There is a semi float and a ful float. The 14ff is pretty indestructable. The 2wd version is the same with the exception of longer shock brackets but it can be made to work.

Dana 44 axles are only worth about 100.00-150.00 depending on gearing and 1/2 or 3/4 ton.

The SM465 from an earlier blazer will not work with your existing t-case. Most SM465's are 10 spline with a 205 t-case. The later SM465 was a 32 spline output and could be had with either a 205 or a 208.

well both d44's are from blazers, so they are 1/2 ton. as far as the trannys, one is a 73 and one is a 78. so would either work with my current t-case? if not, how hard is it to swap the whole tranny/t-case?

Neither tranny will work with your existing t-case.

Look to see if you can see 8 bolts holding and axle to the hub. If not it is a 14SF axle. Still really strong but not as strong as a 14ff.

ok so either way, ff or sf, what is it generally worth? and how about the 4 speed tranny/t-case combo, whats it worth also? thanks for the help btw:bow:

forgot to ask.. would that 2wd c20 have hydro assist steering? or cant you tell with out looking?

Not sure what a 14SF is going for these days but a 14FF brings about $125.00 on average. The SM465/205 (assuming it to be a 205) will get about $250.00-$300.00.

No trucks came with hydro assist steering, that's an aftermarket thing we've been doing with our rigs. If you mean power steering it probably does have it.

about the hydro assist, i was just reading another article about someone gettin the setup off of a 2wd truck and i was just checkin to see if they came stock on em. oh well.. i might try to get one anyway

Don't confuse Hydroboost brakes with hydro-assist steering - thet are two different animals .

I think you mean hydro-boost. Big difference. Some had them and some did not. Just look at the master cylinder. If it has a vacuum booster on it then it is not, if it has hydraulic lines running to it from the power steering pump, it does have hydro-boost.

Just to clarify for you, hydro boost is for the BRAKES not the STEERING. Rather than using engine vacuum to assist in your braking needs it uses hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump instead.

no.. lol i know the difference. i am deff talkin about steering. im not familiar with the 2wd trucks and i saw that someone got the setup off of a 2wd and i was just askin if some came with it. btw about the 14 bolt rear, would that be full posy or limited slip?

Not sure what they were talking about, but no 2wd or 4wd trucks ever came from the factory with Hydraulic assisted steering. The only thing I am aware of getting off of 2wd trucks is the pitman arm for crossover steering swap.

how strong are the SM465/205 combos and how much power will they take safely?

It's all in how you drive - If driven like its stolen than anything can be torn apart. That being said - the 465/205 combo is very stout in stock form . It does have the smallest shaft size ( the coupler and shafts are small 10 spline ) ever offfered but as long as the splines are not wornout you should break all kinds of other drivetrain parts before you snap the T-case input shaft.
NEVRENUF and I had a roller BBC in front of a 465/205 combo for years and beat on it fairly hard everytime it was fired up and had no tranny / T-case issues what so ever.
It is a good setup but tends to have a fair amount of driveline slop in it due to the 10 spline coupler. It's not weak but not as strong as the later 32 spline stuff.

There were some Ford trucks in the 60's (and likely others) that used a hydraulic ram for power assist steering.

That was the early power steering. I know about that stuff but we're talking about something completely different.
