just poped my cover off the dana 70 on the ford and found-

1.clean gear oil-redish tint to the oil
2.4 crosspins and spider gears
3.3:53 gears
4.clean housing no metal

now my questions are:
1.4 crosspins and spiders=??? I thought it was open but both tires spin...
2.how many quarts of gear oil does a 70 need or hold
3.for towing what is the best weight gear oil to run...have no idea what was in the rear when i got it...

any help would be greatly appreciated  !!!

the cross pins are offset if that helps any...like there not in the same place in the carrier (i know that sounds confusing)...i thought mabye something was broke when i saw the spiders but there was no metal in the pan (thinking something was caught up in the spiders making it locked all the time)..it also doesnt make noise when you turn if that helps..

Are the cross pins in a perfectly round hole or a "V"? A Power Lock will have a "V" that allows the move up the ramp to tighten the clutches under a load.

If the pin holes are round you may have a 2 piece open carrier. This design can also be desireable because it uses a drop in version of a Detroit like a 14 bolt.

well i dont think its open because it does not look like a open carrier...its almost like were the crosspins sit at the holes are slotted...like 2 crosspins are on the bottom of the hole...2 are on the top...you get what im saying...i will take a pic tomm...anyone know about how much oil or what weight is good to run??

Sounds like Jimbo* was right, offset pins in slotted holes definitely sounds like a Power Lock.

personally id run the thickest oil you can get...but tahts just me, i run 85w140 in all my axles...

although it is l/s soo that may be TOO thick...regardless make sure you run that additive stuff you can get at the parts store
