first, i replaced my D44 6-lug (fulltime) with a 10 bolt 8-lug,(with lockouts) now the dana is sitting in the driveway, what parts will swap between them? should i save the shafts?

second, i need to replace dr side caliper on the 10 bolt and went to the part store but apprently there are about 5 different calipers and i need the vin to find what my axle is coded (i think the codes were jb3, jb5, etc...) but have no vin. i looked at what they had in for calipers but nothing was dead on, some were wider (between where the pads would be, appx 1/8-1/4" when looking at just the end of the caliper) then others, or had different angles/ blocks around the banjo bolt. i havn't removed my caliper just took a bunch of pics in with me, any ideas??

truck has been in project mode since last october and i'm so close to driving it would love any input.
thanks.

The only thing that will swap is knuckles out. The inner shafts are different lengths. The D44 caliper uses a 7/16" banjo bolt and the 10 bolt uses a 10mm banjo bolt. Swap your D44 calipers onto the 10 bolt otherwise your brake hoses won't work.

i have already replaced my brake hoses, with a set for a newer chevy and they work with the 10 bolt.
i'm worried about swapping the dana calipers because the have been sitting outside for quite sometime now with the hoses open.

As Scott said, outers are interchangeable, insides aren't, so no on the shafts.

Though I know the brake GVWR is in the VIN on some years, I don't know that the VIN is guaranteed to map to the brake RPO. The 10b and D44 calipers are interchangeable, more or less, but do depend on your brake lines. (Also the 3/4's may have a larger piston, so you'd want to stick with that type, but we're discussing fitment here.)

Ideally you'd bring your caliper and banjo bolt in and match them that way. However, some tips...

If you're keeping the original D44 brake lines, get calipers for a 3/4 ton pickup around, say, 1975-6, or whatever year your D44 was.

If you're going to get new brakes lines, then I'd go with the new style, i.e. from 10b. Calipers and lines here would go to a 1985 truck, for instance.

When mixing and matching like this you may find you have to do a little grinding on the calipers to make the lines exit the right way or the like, but if you match years of caliper and line, you should be able to drop right in.

HTH.

Yeah, brake fluid being hygroscopic, the calipers could easily be rusty inside.

I would get new calipers for the 10b -- with core they should be cheap; I think my local parts house gets US$15 or so each exchange.

just got off the phone with a parts store here. i'm going to try a caliper from an 81 k5 with 10 bolt, (my axle is an 81 8 hole)

and i think i may just sell the dana because i don't want to run full time hubs again.

What t-case is in this rig? If it's a fulltime 203 and you installed the 10 bolt with manual locking hubs the truck won't move unless you have the t-case in the loc position when the hubs are unlocked.

I'd get the caliper for a '81 K20 truck; as above, fitment should be the same as the K5 type but the piston's a bit bigger. I think.

The locking hubs and slugs are interchangeable from the D44 to the 10b ... and as Scott says, you may need them.

If your old calpiers are still hanging in there , drop them onto the caliper brackets on the 10 bolt , and your done :thumb:

i picked up a new caliper found out my break code is "JB7" the caliper ended up being about $44 canadian, works great. the old one with the line removed and everything i could not get the piston to slide back in with a big C clamp!!.

i could not use the calipers from the 44 because they had been sitting out side all summer getting rained on with nothing plugging the hoses. (i thought buddy plugged them, he thought i did)

i have a 203 in the truck right now, but in the garage i have 3 more 203's and one has a part-time kit in it.

I would eventually like to swap the sm465/205 i have into the truck but would like to find a hydraulic set up first plus lack of time and money means this wont be happening anytime soon.

i still have more work to do on it so i will be needing the resources of CK5 again soon.
thanks.
