Got this truck over the summer, did as much as I could with what little money I had. I got laid off bout the same time as I got the truck, so didn't want and couldn't really spend money on it. Luckily I do alot of horse tradin' and buying and selling stuff, so that paid for bout everything I have into the truck so far. Here are some pics as it sits now. I lost the pics I had when I first got it, but it was a crew cab long box dually, 2wd. It's gonna be a short box 4wd SRW crew cab....

Front hangers/shackles are from DIY4x B52 kit, springs are junkyard 4" that I had for years, were on my 89 SAS GMC before it got bigger then got parted out. Front axle is a high pinion 60, was out of an 80s van, but had the perches moved in for GMs 32" pads. Real clean shape, 4.10s open, all new kingpin stuff, already had crossover on it from the junkyard.

Rear is actually 1/2ton stuff that I had laying around. Since it was a 2wd, the hangers weren't tall enough for what I wanted. Fronts are 4wd hangers, and 2wd hangers for a poor man's shackle flip. Stock 1 ton 56s for now, see how it rides and sits, then worry bout changing them around. Rear is from a van, had 4.09s and a Govlok, fine for what this truck will see. Had tall perches made so I don't need a block.

Motor will be a 427 tall deck from a 94 Top Kick. Was a propane motor, super clean and low miles. Has TBI intake on it already, one less thing I have to buy. If the specs are right, this motor has more torque than a Vortec 454 that I used to have.

For now the tranny is gonna be a TH400. Till I get the motor in, running and make sure it's all good, then I will swap in a NV4500. Need to get a clutch and throwout bearing first. First thing is find a flywheel for the motor. GM used this style for 3 years, uses a 1 piece rear seal, but same mounting pattern as a 2 peice. Being it's a 1 peice, will have a counterweight on the flywheel, but don't know how much.

T-case is a divorced Ford 205. Already got the crossmember made, need some pics of that, it's pretty sweet. Will be twinsticked, 1310 on the front output, 1350 elsewhere.

6" lift and 35s, short box, crew cab, way GM should have made 'em....

I had a 78 sb 4x4 with a 350 4 speed about 15 years ago. Anyways I took out the 350 and put in a 454,I could not find a flywheel anywhere for a 454, so I took the flywheel i had and got it balanced for a 454. The flywheel was a 12",I think small blocks are internally balanced and big blocks are externally balanced. Not sure if that helps but it worked for me. Have fun!!

I put a 454 in my shortbox, bought a new flywheel for $110. 454, 4-speed, 4.10s, 35s, short box truck, lot's of fun!!!

What makes the 427 a pane, is technically it's internally balanced still, but since there is no room on the crank to put a counterweight, they put it on the flywheel. And since GM never put this motor in anything other than big trucks, it's not gonna be factory. I've been trying to find one online, but nobody lists one.

Anybody know what the horse/torque of the 427TDs?? I've been looking for the past 3-4 hours, can't find it again.....

I doubt its as much as a Vortec 7.4, med duty trucks got power through gearing, more so than the engine, comparitively speaking with light duty trucks.

Before when I searched for specs, somewhere it said in the 250 range, but torque was 450 lb/ft. Vortec's are about 410. Being that the pistons are heavier than hell, and also the huge flywheel that these come with.

Whatever the levels are, it won't be that far off from what a stock 454 would be.....just want to get it in the truck.

Got the truck back from the welder last Friday. Took out 14" between the front bed mount holes rear spring front hangers. He didn't just do a straight cut, there is a notch but the fishplate covers it up. Wish it was on the inside, but oh well, I didn't weld it so not gonna b!tch. Besides the price was right.

Kinda at a stand still now, don't have the money to finish, nor anyplace warm to paint the frame and under the cab...

I'm still at a standstill, only because I need to figure out what direction to take. I have a line on a 5.9 Cummins for $500, needs some work, but not a bad deal. Also found 4 other Cummins that are complete and pretty much ready to go. So if I go with the diesel, will need to rewire the truck, get the motor mounts, etc etc.

For now tho I might put my 427 tall deck it it, it was a TBI motor, so would be the easiest right now. Got a sub tank, need to get lines, straps, new sending unit/pump. I'll get some better pics later this week. Start my new job tomorrow, need to see how much time I'll have....

Had to put the boggers on and see how she sits. With 4" springs sits bout the same height as the 84 that has 6" springs. No motor/tranny/t-case in the crew in the pics. Gonna need to build up the springs or get bigger ones, it's gonna sag when I get the drivetrain in.

I can't wait to get this going. I might have the blue truck sold, some of the parts will go on the crew to finish it. Wanted to make it super nice, aka mall crawler, but it's not that nice in spots. Plus I have my dad's 08' Tundra for a mall crawler, so gotta have a wheeler, the crew would be good I think....wish it was at my house so I could work on it....

Looking good. I have been considering doing a Cummins swap in my Ford tow rig. I would put the Cummins in and sell the 427.

I'd love to have the Cummins, but the motor is pretty much ready to go, the truck is already set up for inection, pretty much plug and play. Also if I go with the Cummins, I need to get a tranny. The 4500 would work, but still need to get a flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, who know what else. I still might do it, but for now want to get the 427 in there and drive it around....

That is a very large truck.... I like it though because it can hold more than 1 and a half people :-P

2 up front 3 in the back.

If I get tired, I can recline the rear bench and take a nap...Choo Choo Customs truck...
