Went out yesterday to go snowshoeing at a local favorite spot. Decided to try to drive a chunk of the access road to where the parking lot would be in summer. There was about 2.5 feet of new snow covering the road since last Saturday (Christmas day) when I drove it last. At that time there was about a foot of snow on the road and it was no biggie. Nobody had been out there, so I was cutting trail. I ended up getting about a mile in before I was wasting our hiking time by doing the back-and-forth 3-to-4 feet of forward gain sort of thing. Ended up getting about halfway to the lot. We were 4 people and no other trucks, so I didn't want to get in over my head. :)

This is where I parked for the day.

Turned out there were 3 hikers already out there, but they were without snowshoes or x-country skis, so they were happy to walk my tire tracks instead of postholing for another mile! That would've been MISERABLE!

This is where we hiked out to, about 6 miles round trip:

It was getting dark as we were nearing the truck on the way back.

One of the best hikes I've ever done, and the wheeling was fun too. Makes me proud to be able to bring friends out to places like that in the truck. :) We were glad to have not had to add 2 miles of hiking to our trip - so the truck was great!

Cool pics Colby! Looks about the same as out weather here yesterday. Went on a big run and fought some snow a little. Clear sunny and cold day!

Thanks, guys. The Oregon landscape is truly breathtaking.

When I get up in the real snow, I frequently chain up. Usually it helps by adding something of a paddle to my tires. I've always put them on the front to help with steering, but I'm thinking putting them on my locked rear might be better. I wonder if the front tires would pack the snow and the chains on the rear would prevent wheel spin so they grip and push forward. What do you think?

It holds up just fine, except that it's pretty beat up. I got it in relatively beat up condition and then tried to build my cage to be the support structure. It worked mostly well. :) It's a... um... I'm going to have to go look at the label on it and get back to you. They're no longer in business.

I thought that looked familiar. Is there any good wheeling up there besides snow wheeling? We did a run up to Cottonwood Peak a few weeks ago. There as a beautiful view looking north towards MT. Ashland and Pilot rock.

I don't know about Cottonwood Peak. Where's that?

There is no good wheeling here, as it's basically outlawed. :( There is the McGrew Trail out of Obrien that's real fun. I've enjoyed cruising out to the Red Buttes area on backroads and found some fun stuff that way too. However, the snow wheeling is always great because there's nobody out here with 4x4s, so I have free reign of the forest service roads 5 minutes from home with good snow. :D

Whereabouts in NorCal are you?

I'm in Yreka. I've done MC Grew trail 2 years ago with some J@#ps. It was a pretty drive. A one ton on 40's is too much truck for the trail. Everything was easy. My group of friends have found some decent wheeling down here. We also found an old J@#p trail near here that hasn't been ran in years. When the snow starts melting we're gonna open it up. I have a friend that is a Forest Circus LEO, he said that since is is on the maps we can brush it out and run it. Cottonwood Peak is the tallest mountain south of MT. Ashland just south of the state line.

Yeah, I ran most of McGrew in 2wheel drive. Pretty bumpy, and real purty, but not challenging. :)

You're close! I'd like to ride with you guys down there sometime. Mind keeping me in the loop? I don't know anyone with a 4x4 around here.

I sent you a message a little while ago. Laters

I just looked up Cottonwood Peak - that's only a stone's throw from here. Do you get there from HWY 96, or Ditch Creek or Copco I-5 exits?

Hey that white stuff is pretty cool, do you have it trucked in :dunno: you got this Florida boy curious.

Nice too see your trusty k9 with you. Bet he was loving it!
