Great group all
So I picked up a 70 and I'm going to be diving in right after the holidays.
I paint cars for a living so we will be repairing it at a collision shop.I have faith in my body techs but I need guidance on order of demolition and construction. That's where I hope you guys can chime in.
Heres what I see that needs to be done
Rockers
Rocker boxes
Floor braces
Outrigger brace drivers side (should I just buy passenger side anyway?)
Brace the doors!!!!this is the part that keeps me up at night.Could someone please tell me every detail about this? How do I know I have it perfect?

Parts I already have

Genuine GM replacement quarter panels
Genuine GM replacement rockers
Clean rocker boxes cut out of another truck
Floor supports out of another truck

Parts I'm ordering next week

Complete rear floor
Rocker box caps
1 rear inner wheel house
Outrigger brace

Where can I find one of those factory assembly manuals?

Again.Any support you all could give me will be greatly appreciated. Like I said. The bracing keeps me up at night

Thanks guys

Brace the doors:

The doors will have to come off so you’re not bracing the doors but the door openings. If your door gaps are good right now, you want to keep the body from sagging when you start cutting material away. It somewhat depends on how much damage there is, but I’ve seen people (myself included) weld up a bar to an old hinge and bolt the other end to the striker plate area to keep the opening size from moving around. If you have a hard top, that might also be good to keep installed while you have the rocker area dismantled (as long as the door gaps are ok right now).

If your door gaps aren’t so good now, you will want to figure out where the body is sagging and brace it so the doors will fit once you’re done.

The doors are on with 2 bolts. So I dont have that. The roof is not bolted down and the fenders are just sitting in there for a pic.Should I completely assemble it?

If the doors only have two bolts holding them on, there might be a fun reason why. Check that all the threaded nuts inside the A-pillar are not stripped or rusted out. Especially check the lower area! Fully bolt the doors, front fenders, and the top on and align them as best you can before cutting anything.

Also check or replace the body mounts and note any shims the factory used under the A and B pillar mounts. If anything is out of whack, you can place a jack and a 4x4 under one of the body mounts to tweak the gap alignment by adding or subtracting shims. You might even try doing that just to see how adding/subtracting shims affects the door and fender gaps now. That way you’ll have an idea how to adjust for problems later.

If you work at a body shop, you may know how to do all this already, so no offense intended. Just make sure the doors fit before you weld anything back on.

There was a guy here a number of years ago that didn’t check and then got the truck painted and then couldn’t get the doors back on and had to do a bunch of repairs to it.

You have it a bit harder cause someone has already gone in and “fixed” something’s for you, though not very well or at least you don’t know how well they did.

@Greg72 has a pretty detailed assembly process in his build thread, you might take a look at that. Really depends on how far you want to take the repairs.

So after laying under my blazer for a little while I scrapped my plan.I have all the cab supports and I was going to buy outriggers.New plan is to buy one of those complete floor with braces.Has anyone had experience with these?First off do they fit?Second do they come with the inner rockers? Thanks

would have to see what floor you’re talking about. I can’t recall one. Every single replacement panels I’ve ever seen has required a decent amount of “tweaking” to get it to fit right. I know there’s a truck floor pan that can be adapted for use on a blazer, maybe that’s what you’re talking about?

also, what’s your plan for the K5 overall? Total restoration, OffRoad buggy, daily driver? What you do depends on what your plans are. Fixing that “right” will take a big stack of bills or lots of DIY skills and time. Need to figure out where your balance of “bills vs skills” really is.

I think I'm going to go with gmc pauls. Complete floor with braces.Im a little nervous about cutting g out that much structure at once but I'm sure we can make it work.I hope. They say they fit excellent for what that's worth.I ordered rocker box caps, supports, rear floor supports, A and rear door pillar lower patches.Just waiting on them to get another floor in stock. When that happens I will order that and rear cargo floor with braces at the same time.If I understand correctly the b pillar is inside the quarter. Is that right?

https://gmcpauls.com/Newproducts.htm I think he is looking at this floor.

woah, they didn’t have that when I was doing mine. For the price, it’s worth a try. Looks like the inner rocker isn’t included, but those are just flat pieces anyway so easy enough to make.

I emailed him and the inner rocker is included. I have all the body braces but I was going to have to buy the outrigger braces.I saw this and it will be so much cleaner.Paint it first weld it up and just blend the welds.Im pretty excited about going this route
